One of the oldest traditions of the Spring Festival is the coloring of Easter eggs.
Let's figure out how to paint eggs for Easter to get the original color and pattern.
General rules first:
✔ To prevent the eggs from bursting during boiling, they need to be kept warm or at room temperature for about an hour; when boiling, you can add a tablespoon of salt to the water, and small holes can be punctured at one end of each egg.
✔ Do not overcook eggs, otherwise they will be beautiful only on the outside, and inside the yolk will become bluish.
✔ The longer the egg is boiled, the more likely it is that the paint from the broth will be absorbed deeply into it.
✔ Before painting eggs, you need to rub them with soapy water or alcohol - the paint will lay down more evenly.
✔ When dyeing eggs, you need to add a little vinegar or lemon juice to the water, then the paint will lay flat. Acetic acid eats away at the shell, making the surface rougher and more susceptible to colorants.
✔ The richer the color, the more ingredients are needed for the coloring solution (for example, husks).
Knowledgeable people say that the husks of homemade onions are best suited for coloring, the color of its decoction is more intense.
✔ To make the color brighter, dyed eggs can be refrigerated directly in the dye solution overnight.
✔ To make the colored eggs shine, wipe them dry and grease them with sunflower oil.
✔ can be stored for about 3-5 days at room temperature, at the slightest suspicion of staleness, they do not need to be eaten.
✔ If you haven't used all of the colored eggs on Easter day, they can be a great addition to a variety of dishes from salads to sauces.
For dyeing eggs, natural, food or aniline dyes are used. Flowers, leaves, grain husks, bark, roots, and also berries can be used as raw materials for plant dyes.
First, let's decide on the colors: in what shades can we paint the eggs so that the dyes are flawlessly natural? In fact, the choice is not too large: yellow, brown, blue, purple, greenish, pink, red, burgundy.
❧ Ocher (brownish yellow) - onion peel. 4 cups red onion skins Boil eggs for 30 minutes - 1 hour. Depending on the time of soaking, the eggs will turn from bright scarlet to deep red.
❧ Gilding - turmeric. Add 2-3 tablespoons of turmeric to hot water, boil to intensify the color.
❧ Pink - cranberry, beetroot juice. Soak boiled eggs in cranberry or beetroot juice.
❧ Purple, blue - dried violets. Add violet flowers to hot water and soak overnight. If you add a little lemon juice to the water, you get a lavender color.
❧ Blue is red cabbage. Two heads of finely chopped red cabbage, 500 ml of water and 6 tablespoons of white vinegar. Soak overnight for a deep blue color.
❧ Green- spinach, parsley. Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the mixture to obtain a purple color, or boil eggs with spinach.
❧ Lavender- red grape juice. Soak eggs in grape juice.
❧ Yellow- young birch leaves. Prepare a decoction of young birch leaves, let it brew. Wash eggs, dip in warm infusion and cook for 10 minutes.
❧ Pastel colors - fresh frozen berries of cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, lingonberries, elderberries. For soft pink and blue, grate the shell with a handful of blueberries or cranberries. For light crimson raspberries, for blue - elderberry.
Advice: All these berries can be bought dried at the pharmacy.
❧ Dark brown - strong coffee or black tea. Boil eggs in 250 ml of coffee or tea leaves.
General rule: Remember to add a tablespoon of vinegar to the paint decoction.
Video instruction: We paint eggs for Easter with natural dyes with our own hands
As a result, we can completely paint the eggs for Easter with absolutely natural dyes.
Someone will stop at this, and someone will also want to paint an Easter egg. In this case, we make paints from dyes.
We make paints from dyes
The easiest and safest way to make eggshell paint is ... to use the yolk. Because. we need very little amount of paint for painting, then 2 yolks and 2 tbsp. enough water to make the base.
Separate the yolks and whites. Beat the yolks with water and add a few drops of decoction of plants or herbs to get color. Don't forget to stock up on a few small containers for individual colors.
It is good to paint with egg yolk paint on a dense shell. It is also suitable for patterning sugar cookies prior to baking.
The second way to formulate paint is to add a binder in the form of honey or molasses.
Advice:After coloring Easter eggs, to give them shine, you need to wipe them with vegetable oil.
So - mix a few drops of honey with a strong decoction of the desired color. Add the yolk if you want. The paint will adhere better and dry faster. You can add protein. But then the color will be almost transparent, the most delicate.
If you need white paint for a drawing, you need to crush regular school chalk into powder and mix with an egg. This paint will pick up well on a brush, dry for a long time, but it will be the most durable.
Onion peels are probably the most common and well-known way of dyeing Easter eggs, and the color range is very diverse: from yellowish to dark blue. It all depends not only on the concentration of the broth, but also on the color of the husk itself.
Usually, the husk begins to be harvested in a few weeks: the amount depends on the saturation of the desired color. You can also mix different types of husks: from white, red and regular onions, then the shades will be the most unexpected.
You can paint such eggs in two ways - boil them in onion broth or leave the hard-boiled eggs overnight (accordingly, the intensity of the shade will be different).
To paint eggs with onion peels, you will need: eggs in the right amount, a lot of onion peels, water, salt, vegetable oil
Eggs need to be boiled in onion skins. Therefore, so that the eggs do not burst, they must be kept at room temperature for at least one hour and a couple of teaspoons of salt must be added to the water where the eggs will be boiled. And of course, eggs must be washed thoroughly before painting.
Eggs of any color are suitable for this painting method. Collect the onion skins in a wide saucepan. Fill with water so that the pan is not full. And put the husks to simmer. I boil the husk for 45-50 minutes to get a dark, rich paint.
When the onion peel paint has boiled, increase the heat and put the eggs directly into the pan. They are boiled along with the husk. The boiling time for eggs can be 15 to 20 minutes. But then the eggs are well stored. During cooking, the eggs need to be turned over from time to time so that they are evenly colored. And of course, the water must completely cover the eggs.
Put boiled colored eggs in a saucepan with cold water and leave to cool. When the eggs have cooled, they need to be removed and rubbed thoroughly. The finished eggs are of course colored, but not very beautiful, they are matte. To make the eggs shine, they can be greased with ordinary vegetable oil.
Coloring in deciduous and herbal decoctions, and in tea
Decoctions of birch leaves, apple leaves, chamomile, nettle, etc. are ideal for coloring eggs.
You can also perfectly dye eggs in tea: green, black and hibiscus (Sudanese rose).
It is enough just to boil the eggs in a tea solution.
Boiled eggs are usually rubbed with juices: carrot, beetroot, spinach or sorrel juice, you can also use the juice of red cabbage, blueberries or strawberries, etc. It all depends on your imagination.
For example, here's how to color eggs with beets.
A beautiful red-burgundy color of the shell is obtained if you paint eggs in a decoction of beets (10 minutes).
To do this, you need to peel and grate the beets on a coarse vegetable grater. Add 1 teaspoon of vinegar. Three large beets per liter of water. Or, you can simply grate boiled eggs with fresh beet juice.
To achieve this effect, washed wet eggs should be rolled in rice or other cereals (you can use dry peas, buckwheat, etc.) and wrap tightly with gauze so that the cereal sticks for sure, and soak in a coloring broth.
Before cooking, the eggs are wrapped in onion peels or leaves of some plants (by the way, it will turn out nicely with nettle or spinach leaves) and boiled until tender.
After boiling, beautiful streaks form on the eggs.
Before cooking, prepared eggs should be wrapped in random order with shedding multi-colored threads, it is better to choose threads dyed with natural dyes and cook until tender.
If the threads do not shed, and the eggs are boiled in a dye solution, you will just get interesting light stripes.
Eggs can be boiled in strong coffee, or boiled eggs can be left in it overnight.
There are many more folk and family coloring methods: ink staining, when ink is applied to boiled eggs; dyeing in silk rags, when eggs are boiled by wrapping them in rags of different colors; some color the eggs with brilliant green, fucorcin, and methylene blue solution (but these methods are a little extreme).
When dyeing eggs, you should rely on your experience and skill.
Modern technologies have made their own adjustments to the methods of coloring and opened up new possibilities.
But the question immediately arises: how is it safe to color the eggs so that they can then be eaten?
Dyes are developed specifically to restore the natural color of products lost during processing or to make colorless products more attractive, we are talking about drinks, ice cream, confectionery. So, in principle, any food coloring is relatively harmless - if used in the right proportions.
There are two methods of painting: hot and cold. With the hot method, the eggs are boiled with paint, with the cold method, the already prepared boiled eggs are kept in a dyeing solution. In order for the paint to lay down evenly, vinegar or lemon juice is added to the coloring solution.
Food colors should be diluted according to the manufacturer's instructions. The most suitable utensils for such paints are glass jars with a wide neck.
Today there are three types of food colorings - blended, synthetic and natural.
Mixed and synthetic dyes, as a rule, are used in large industrial plants and allow you to get any desired shade. In everyday life, they are practically not used, and it is they who are subject to the basic safety requirements and legislative standards.
Aniline dyes are available in powder or tablet form. They are sold at hardware stores. You need to buy those that are intended for home dyeing of wool products. Prepare the concentrate according to the directions in the instructions. Divide half a liter of concentrate into three parts, pour into glass jars, add 150-200 grams of boiled water and 2 tablespoons of 9% vinegar to each of the three parts. If desired, in the first two parts, you can add a little paint of a different color to get a wide range of shades.
Some aniline dyes are poisonous and are only suitable for dyeing a souvenir Easter egg. Such an egg cannot be eaten.
The dyes listed below, which can be identified by marking, have the most harmful effect on human health - they must be indicated on the pack, even with a sweet powder. When buying bags of powder-dyes, you should also pay attention to the presence of these substances in order to protect yourself and your family: the eggshell is porous, and harmful substances can penetrate deeper into the protein. So, there are 6 dyes to be wary of, the ban of which is sought by public organizations:
Dyeing eggs in aniline and food dyes is done by bathing. The egg is placed on a plastic spoon and dipped in paint. The paint contains acid, and if the egg gets wet in food paint for more than five minutes, and in aniline paint for more than three minutes, the calcium in the top layer of the shell will be broken, the egg will be colored unevenly and will be hopelessly spoiled. Do not immerse several eggs in the paint can. After painting one egg, remove it from the paint, gently blot it with a soft cloth and start painting another. There are food colors in which eggs are colored only during boiling. They are suitable for preparing monochromatic dyes.
Needless to say, Easter egg coloring is a great way to spend a fun family evening with your kids or friends?
However, if the family has small children, try to do without aniline dyes. The guys will certainly want to "help" you in making Easter eggs. You simply "cannot do" without them. But there he licked his finger, rubbed his eyes, breathed in vapors - so he got poisoned ... Food colors are not as bright as aniline, but health is more expensive
In the ancient legend about the Easter egg, it is said that, having come to the Emperor in the morning, Maria presented him with a red egg and exclaimed: "Christ is Risen!" Some researchers believe that such a gift was caused by the poverty of Mary, and the very coloring of the egg in a bright red color served to attract the attention of the Emperor. However, all over the world the Easter egg is considered a symbol of the beginning of a new life for Christ, and the red color denotes His blood. Therefore, the red or red-brown color of festive eggs is still considered traditional. Our ancestors dyed eggs in a traditional color, using improvised materials - natural dyes (onion skins or beets). Although at the present time the market is replete with a variety of artificial colors, stickers and other materials for decorating holiday eggs, for many, natural ways of coloring one of the main symbols of the Easter holiday remain in the first place. If for some reason you forgot to pick up onion skins for the holiday or there is not a single beet in the house, then try dyeing the eggs with ordinary black tea. To obtain an even and beautiful color of Easter eggs, it is necessary that they are initially clean. Therefore, before painting the eggs, rinse thoroughly with water and ordinary laundry soap or baking soda, then rinse several times to remove the remaining detergent.
After that, put the clean chicken eggs in a ladle, fill with purified water so that the water covers them completely and cook for about 8-10 minutes.
While the eggs are cooling, prepare the tea leaves. To do this, pour twisted tea leaves into a deep and wide enough saucepan, fill them with boiling water in a volume of 600 milliliters, cover the pan with a lid and boil the tea for about 5 minutes. Leave the tea to brew for another five minutes.
Pour the tea into cups, put the boiled eggs and leave to stain for an hour, occasionally turning the eggs for the best color.

In general, the ways of decorating and coloring Easter eggs can be quite different. One thing unites them: such work, especially in the bosom of the family, can charge you with mood for a long period of time. It is mainly interesting to do this with the knowledge that you are preparing for one of the most important Orthodox and bright days of the year - Easter.
We continue the theme of Easter colors. Here are some more interesting ways to paint eggs for Easter with your own hands without dyes. Everyone is already fed up with bright chemistry, and so almost everything is artificial around, I want to try to use natural products as much as possible, at least when possible. Therefore, I want to show you how to color eggs with natural dyes: beets, red wine, black tea and walnut shells. To get a distinct, saturated color, you need to observe certain proportions. It takes a lot of time to dye, because unlike chemical dyes, natural dyes are absorbed into the shell very slowly. You will get a light shade in an hour and a half, and a bright color in 5-6 hours.
For this we need the following ingredients:
The shell will give a light yellow color, tea - brown, wine - blue, beets - pink.
The amount of each product, except for tea, is given for one egg. The next one can be put into the coloring solution only when the previous one is colored. If you want to speed up the process, multiply the volume of the food by the number of eggs you want to paint at the same time in a certain color. Otherwise, your "paint" will not be the desired concentration and the color will come out pale.
Let's start with beets. We clean it straight raw and three on a grater. Put it in a cup so that the beets give juice. We don't add water!
We brew ordinary black tea in the proportion - 3 tablespoons of tea for half a liter of water.
Pour the wine into a glass.
Put the walnut shells in a small ladle, pour half a glass of water. They will need to be boiled for 10 minutes.
Before coloring the eggs, you need to wash them thoroughly, you can even use a sponge for this. We check that there are no numbers or anything else left on them.
Out of five eggs, I will immediately put one in a ladle with nutshells and cook for 10 minutes on the stove.
On the other burner I will put a saucepan with the remaining four eggs.
After 10 minutes, when the eggs are hard-boiled, place a saucepan with four eggs under cold water. And what was cooked in the shells of walnuts, we shift hot into a earthenware mug and pour the entire contents of the ladle along with the shells on top.
Put the cooled white eggs in all the dyes. We immerse one in a glass of wine.
We put the second in the beets so that the eggs are not visible from it.
The third is dipped in strong tea.
The fourth we will also dye in tea. But not just like that, but we will try to make a pattern on it. So that a barely distinguishable image, like an old fresco, appears on the egg, we will tie a parsley leaf to it with threads. Like this.
The longer you keep the eggs in our natural dyes, the brighter the final color will be. I kept it for about 5 hours. Due to the fact that I did not pull the shell out of the broth, but from the tea leaves, the color was not uniform, but with a texture, the same is with the beets. You can do it differently. Then just rub the boiled egg with beet juice, and lower the rest into the already strained infusion.
After painting, all eggs must be dried on a napkin, especially beetroot, if you wash off or wipe off the dried paint, it will become much paler.
It remains only to wipe the finished eggs with cotton wool or a napkin dipped in sunflower oil and put them beautifully on a plate.
Happy Easter!
