Mango (English Mango, in Thai Ma-muang)

Price:
Season:

One of the most popular fruits in Thailand and many other countries is mango. But the fruits that are sold in our stores can never be compared with the tender and juicy Thai ones. The top of the mango is covered with a tough, inedible rind. Its color can range from green to bright yellow or red, depending on the variety and its degree of ripeness.

The most delicious mango variety, as in the picture above: bright yellow, pot-bellied. And bright yellow elongated.

The peel must be carefully cut with a knife. After that, you should cut the mango in half and remove a large bone from the center of the fruit. Now you can enjoy its juicy, honey pulp with an amazing aroma.

Here it is eaten both in pure form and added to salads and other dishes and drinks.

Mangosteen (in Thai Mnog-khut)

Price:

Season:

Be sure to try this authentic Thai fruit. It is covered with a deep purple skin that is not edible. Underneath is a juicy, slightly oily pulp that looks like cloves of garlic. But in reality, it is sweet and delicious. Sometimes small but hard bones can be caught in the pulp.

The fruit itself is small, about the size of a tangerine. Thais advise eating it fresh, right after durian, as mangosteen cools the body and quenches thirst. This fruit is more often sold for 35 baht / kg. Yields peak from April to September. Mangosteen contains a large amount of vitamins B and C, and is also a source of calcium and niacin.

Durian (English Durian, Too-ree-an)

Price: from 20 to 100 baht

Season: from May to August

He was called the "King of Fruits" for a reason. Its large fruits can grow up to 8 kg in weight, and the hard, thorny peel of the fruit is very similar to the shell. The flesh of the durian itself is pale yellow in color and is divided into several parts. Thais consider durian to be an effective aphrozodiac. Everyone has probably heard about this fruit. It is famous for its specific, pungent and very unpleasant odor. Many people compare it to the smell of rotting meat or rotten eggs. It is about durians that they say "the taste of heaven, the smell of hell." But unlike the simply disgusting smell, the fruit has a surprisingly pleasant and delicate taste, which is very often compared to the taste of nuts and strawberries.

When buying this fruit in Thailand, it is worth considering that with it you may not be allowed into the hotel precisely because of the smell, since it is very difficult to remove it from the room. And it is better to eat the pulp with gloves so that the smell of the fruit does not remain on your hands.

Durian is most often sold already completely ready-to-use, that is, peeled and divided into separate pieces. When choosing such a fruit, be sure to make sure that the durian is cut in front of you. And the purchased fruit must be eaten as quickly as possible. The longer the pieces of pulp interact with the air, the more unpleasant the smell becomes. If you don't want to eat durian right away, it's better to buy it in a peel, and cut it yourself at home.

Since durian has warming properties, don't risk combining it with alcohol. Due to the awful smell, not everyone dares to taste this amazing fruit.

Jackfruit; Kha-nun

Price: from 30 to 60 per kilo.

Season: from January to August

Its other better known name is Breadfruit. Jackfruit fruits can weigh up to 40 kg. From above, it is covered with a dense crust with many small thorns, under which there is a yellow in color and sweet in taste, pulp with a pleasant smell. It is divided into separate parts-lobules similar to a pear. The jackfruit slices are not soft - they crunch a little in the mouth. It tastes like DUSHES.

Since it is very difficult to cope with such a huge fruit on your own, it is sold already peeled and divided into slices. By the way, there is a bone inside each of the slices of pulp, which is used for separate cooking.

The sales season for breadfruit runs from January to August, but it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two months. The pulp of the fruit is sold in sachets of about 10 slices each. The cost of one package will be 20 baht.
I want to draw your attention to the fact that some people have an allergic reaction after eating the fruit. A lump appears in the throat, which interferes with swallowing and breathing. The spasms subside within a few hours.

Dragon fruit or Pitahaya (English Pitahaya, in Thai Geow mangon)

Price: from 30 to 50 baht / kg.

Season:

To be precise, this is not a fruit at all, but the fruit of a cactus. In Russia it is often called the "Dragon's Eye". The fruit is native to Australia, but it has taken root well on the Thai islands. The fruit is quite large, about the size of a palm. On average, the fruit weighs 200-500 grams, but you can find specimens weighing up to one kilogram.

From above, the pitahaya is covered with large scales of red or crimson color. Inside the fruit, white flesh is hidden, which is simply dotted with small black bones. The taste of the fruit is very similar to kiwi, but not as intense. Some people generally consider this fruit insipid and tasteless.

Dragon fruit, before eating, is usually cut lengthwise, and the pulp itself is eaten with a spoon. But you can divide the pitahaya into slices and eat it like a melon. The fruits are harvested all year round and cost an average of 35 baht per kg. Jams are made from the pulp of the fruit, jellies and juices are made, but it is most often used to prepare alcoholic beverages.

Noina (Noi-na) or Sugar apple (sugar apple)

Price: from 30 to 80 baht / kg.

Season: from June to September

A very unusual fruit in its appearance. Its fruit resembles a green apple in size and color, but only very lumpy in shape. Hidden under the bumpy skin is a very sweet, crunchy, milky pulp, in which there are many seeds.
Ripe fruit is eaten with a spoon, cutting the fruit in half.

Choose this fruit carefully, because many who came across an unripe fruit disliked it very much. The main gathering season for Noina runs from June to September.

I give you a little hint for choosing a ripe fruit: it should be soft to the touch, and the peel scales are easily removed. If the fruit is hard, it means that it is not yet ripe. Thais love to add this fruit to ice cream.

Rambutan (English Rambutan; Ngoh)

Price: from 10 to 40 baht / kg.

Season: from May to September

Such a fruit is simply impossible not to notice on the shelves. Its small fruits, about 5 cm in diameter, are red in color. They are covered with villi resembling thorns, but soft to the touch.

When buying such a fruit, make sure that the peel is bright red, and the villi are green at the tips. To peel the fruit, you need to cut the peel a little in the center, then open it with your fingers by pressing on it.

Inside there is a moderately sweet tender flesh of a milky color. There is a small bone in the center of the fruit.

You can make delicious jelly from the fruit or cook compote. Rambutan is harvested between May and September and is sold for 35-40 baht per kg. But you can also find 10 baht. For example, on sale in Macro, Big C or Tesco Lotus.

Papaya (Papaya; Ma-Ia-ko)

Price: from 10 to 50 baht / kg.

Season: all year round

A very common southern fruit that grows on trees. The papaya looks like a vegetable marrow. The unripe fruit is eaten as a vegetable.

But the ripe fruit has a very tender and sweet pulp, bright orange color. Seeds are located in the center of the pulp. The taste of the fruit is something between a melon and a pumpkin. Due to the similarity in taste and composition to melon, papaya is sometimes called the "melon tree".

Papaya is harvested all year round. It is not expensive at all, about 20 baht per kg. Unripe papaya is the main ingredient in the spicy Thai salad.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the juice of an unripe fruit is white. It is very poisonous, but during the ripening period it loses its toxicity and becomes transparent and watery.

Passion frut

Price: from 35 to 50 baht / kg.

Passion fruit fruits are similar in size and shape to a chicken egg. They are covered with an inedible rind of bright red, purple or burgundy colors. In order to enjoy the pulp, the fruit is cut in half.

Passion fruit pulp is similar to jelly of bright yellow color and sweet and sour taste. Very similar to sea buckthorn.

Of course, you can try the fruit neat, but I recommend trying the fruit juices and jellies. Be careful, the bones of the fetus cause drowsiness. Passion fruit bears fruit from May to August.

Baltic herring (Salakh; Ra-kum)

Price: from 30 to 60 baht / kg.

Season: May to August

Another name for the fruit is "snake fruit", it received because of its peel resembling snake skin scales. When cleaning the fruit, be very careful, its scales are sharp and dense, easily dig into the skin.

The herring flesh is dense, yellowish and divided into several parts. It has a sweet and sour taste and an unobtrusive aroma. The harvesting season is from May to August.

Guava (Farang)

Price: 30-50 baht / kg.

Season: all year round

The traditional tropical fruit looks like an apple with an uneven surface. The flesh of the fruit is dense, white or pink in color with a lot of small seeds.

Do not expect too exotic taste from the fruit, but the aroma is simply magnificent. In addition, the fruit is very rich in vitamin C. It is eaten with the peel.

Lychee (Lichi; Lin-chi)

Price: 50-90 baht / kg.

Season: only from April to June

It is a small round fruit with a red bumpy skin. It easily lags behind the sweet white pulp.

The taste of the fruit is slightly tart with a scent of perfume. There is an oblong bone in the center of the pulp. It's a pity, but you can only eat fresh lychee from May to June, for this reason the price of the fruit is quite high.

Lychee perfectly quenches the feeling of thirst, therefore it is very often used for preparing soft drinks. Well, if you suffer from anemia, then this fruit is simply necessary for you.

Longan (Lam-yai)

Price: 20-50 baht / kg.

Season: June to September

The fruit looks like nuts, but it grows in clusters, like grapes. Some people compare it in appearance to a small potato. Its light brown rind is not edible, but it is very easy to peel off the pulp.

The translucent fruit pulp is juicy and sweet, with a stone in the center. Longan is one of the most beloved fruits of Thais. Mostly they eat it fresh, and in cafes this fruit is often combined with ice cream. The consistency of the pulp is similar to grapes, the taste is sweet and juicy.

Longan is harvested from June to September.

Longkong (Langsat)

Price: 30-90 baht / kg.

Season: from June to October

In general, both in appearance and in growth, this fruit is very similar to Longang. Its main difference is in the pulp. It is also divided into lobules and is translucent, but has a yellowish tint.

It tastes sweet, but with a slight hint of sourness and a taste of tree buds.

You can enjoy this fruit from June to October. The average price per kilogram is 40 baht.

Carambola (Start fruit; in Thai Ma-fuang)

Price: 40-50 baht / kg.

Season: from October to December

It is a four-sided fruit, yellow or yellow-green in color. In cross section, it is very much like a star. For this, the fruit received its second name "Star Fruit".

The fruit is completely edible. It tastes slightly sweet with sourness and very juicy. Something in between a vegetable and a fruit. You can try carambola throughout the year, but the most delicious fruits will be from October to December.

This fruit is very often used for cooking meat dishes, one might say it is used as a vegetable. And Thais also consider carambola to be an excellent hangover cure.

Sapodilla (Sapodilla; La-mut)

Price: 30-45 baht / kg.

Season: from November to May

Outwardly, the fruit is small in size, with a light brown skin.

The pulp of the fruit is caramel in color and taste, but to my great regret, it is absolutely not juicy, astringent. In the center of the pulp are small black bones with hooks at the tips. You should be careful when eating it. You can get hurt. The texture of the pulp is similar to persimmon.

The season of maturity runs from September to December. The price is about 40 baht.

Tamarind (in Thai Ma-kham-wan)

Price: 50-80 baht / kg.

Season: from December to March

Only the most timid traveler, finding himself in an exotic country, embarrassed by the appearance, smell or name, will refuse to taste some unfamiliar fruit. Accustomed to apples and oranges, tourists hardly force themselves to bite off a piece of mangosteen, durian or herring. Meanwhile, it is a gastronomic revelation that can become one of the brightest impressions of the entire trip.

Below are exotic fruits from different countries - with photos, descriptions and English equivalents of names.

Durian

The fruit of durian - "fruit with the taste of heaven and the smell of hell" - irregular oval shape, with very sharp thorns. Under the skin there is a viscous pulp with a unique taste. The "king of fruits" has a pungent ammonium smell, so strong that durian is forbidden to be transported on airplanes and taken into hotel rooms, as evidenced by the corresponding posters and signs at the entrance. The most fragrant and most exotic fruit in Thailand is very rich in vitamins and nutrients.

A few rules for those wishing to taste (by no means try!) Durian:

  • Do not try to pick the fruit yourself, especially in the off-season. Ask the seller about this, have him cut and pack it in transparent film. Or find a pre-packaged fruit in the supermarket.
  • Press lightly on the pulp. It should not be elastic, but it should be easy to slip under your fingers, like butter. Elastic flesh already smells unpleasant.
  • It is undesirable to combine with alcohol, since the pulp of durian acts on the body as a stimulant of enormous strength. Thais believe that durian warms the body, and a Thai proverb says that the "heat" of durian can be tempered by the coolness of mangosteen.

If the skin is punctured unevenly in different places, the fruit is already stale. You can open the fruit by making a hole in the skin with a knife and fingers. Do not try to grab the slices with your hands: the pulp is so tender that you just crush it. It tolerates transportation well.

In this article, you will learn about the most popular exotic fruits that are sold in Thailand. And also: how much fruits cost, what they taste like, how to eat them and how to take them out.

Of course, you have already tried some exotic fruits. But "herring" and "sapodilla" for us, for example, became a discovery)

It is definitely worth just trying everything and finding your favorites.

1. Baltic herring (Snake Fruit)

The form: Oval, elongated. Often sold in twigs (~ 8-10 fruits each). There are thorns on the peel.

Colour: Lilac-brown-red-brown, resembles snake skin

Pulp: Light, yellowish, juicy, slightly fibrous, with large brown bones. Inside it is divided into 2-3 lobules.

Taste: Honey-sweetish, with sourness

How they eat: Peel off with a knife and eat. Cleaning is not easy, because there are thorns on the peel and the peel itself is quite dense.

Season: May-August

Price: 40-60 baht per kg (~ 80 rubles or $ 1.33)

Our impression: We liked the fruit! But it is difficult to clean and the bones are very large. After a couple of days of storage in the refrigerator, the herring skin becomes dry and is less cleaned. So it is better to eat the fruit fresh.

2. Longan (Dragon Eye)

The form: Small round fruit. Sold on twigs in a bunch or without twigs, in a box. Longan looks like a small potato.

Colour: Light brown (potato)

Pulp: Transparent white, juicy, watery. The consistency resembles a ripe plum. Inside there is a large, black, round bone. Therefore, the name is “dragon's eye”.

Taste: Not very pronounced, delicate, sweet and sour, can be remotely compared with strawberry.

How they eat: Peel and eat. The outside of the longan has a rather thin but dense skin. It will have to be cut in order to peel the fruit. It comes off easily.

Season: May-August, but in March they were :)

Price: 90 baht per bundle or 50 baht (~ 100 rubles or $ 1.66) per box

Our impressions: We liked the fruit. It's weird, juicy, and easy to clean.

3. Sapodilla (Lamut, Sapodilla)

The form: Small oval fruit, about the size of a chicken egg.

Colour: Brown. Looks like a bald kiwi :)

Pulp: Brownish, consistency comparable to persimmon or ripe pear. Inside there are 2-3 small black elongated bones.

Taste: Honey-caramel, incredible! Very sweet.

How they eat: Peel off, eat, spit out bones

Season: September-December, very rare in March - but you can also find

Price: 65 baht per kg (~ 130 rubles or $ 2.1)

Our impressions: This fruit is awarded the second place! (First place goes to mango). Sapodilla is incredibly tasty. The only negative is that it quickly deteriorates.

4. Mangosteen (Garlic, Mangosteen)

By the way, that's right - “Mangosteen”, not “Mangosteen” :)

Mangosteen looks like this:

The form: Round shape, about the size of a tangerine. Above is a small twig and a couple of small leaves.

Colour: Skin dense, dark brown outside, purple inside.

Pulp: White, watery, sweetish. It is divided into wedges, which makes the mangosteen look like garlic. There are bones inside the large lobules.

Taste: Sweetish, sour, not bright.

How they eat: Peel the skin (with a knife) and eat the inside

Season: April-September

Price: from 50 baht per kg (~ 100 rubles or $ 1.7)

Our impressions: In Thailand, this thing is called the "queen of fruits", but we did not understand its charm. It's worth a try once.

5. Mango

The form: Oval, tapered on one side

Colour: Light, yellow-orange

Pulp: Soft, delicate, not fibrous. The pulp of ripe fruit melts in your mouth. The bone is rather flat.

Taste: Mango in Thailand, unlike mango from Moscow stores, has a less intense (less harsh) taste. Sweet, honey. Mango taste :)

How to eat: Peel a thin skin and enjoy

Season: April-July. They also sell out of season, but more expensive

Price: Mango is not cheap in Thailand (in March), 80 baht per kilogram (~ 160 rubles or $ 2.5). You can bargain for 70 baht. Can be found over 60, but small and broken.

Our impressions: incredibly tasty! Eat there. In our stores, this delicacy is expensive and it is not often possible to find good options.

Sometimes fruit shops sell green mangoes. These are the same mangoes, only not ripe, and therefore cheaper. They are edible but firm. Ripe mangoes are, of course, tastier.

Probably the one who came up with the design of the Nokia 7610 phone ate a lot of Thai mango :) Here is my first association:

Store mangoes from Thailand in the refrigerator. Our fruit lasted normally for a week. Maybe they would have lain longer, but ended :)

6. Pitahaya (Pitaya, Dragon Fruit, Dragon Fruit, Pitahaya, Dragon Friut)

The form: Oval fruit, slightly larger than a large apple.

Colour: Bright crimson skin with green scales

Pulp: White, with black seeds. The seeds are the size of poppy seeds.

Taste: No pronounced taste, slightly sweetish, seeds crunch on teeth. The consistency is comparable to kiwi, only more grainy.

How they eat: Cut into halves and eat with a spoon. Or peel and cut into wedges.

Season: all year round

Price: 90 baht per kg (~ 180 rubles or $ 2.8)

Our impressions: Beautiful, bright, interesting, but .. tasteless. Buy once, at least your eyesight will be delighted - the combination of colors is simply incredible!

7. Carambola (Star-Fruit, Start Fruit, Carambola)

The form: Small, rather light, oval in shape. In section, it has the shape of a five-pointed star. The size of this star fruit can be compared to a large pear.

Colour: yellow-green, yellow-orange.

Pulp: The pulp can be compared to thick-walled pepper: crispy, juicy.

Taste: Tastes like a pea pod. Herbal, watery, sweetish. It looks a bit like pepper.

How they eat: cut into slices, do not peel.

Season: May-August

Price: 90 baht per kg (~ 180 rubles or $ 2.7)

Our impressions: try it once for fun. I'm pretty sure you won't want to anymore :)

8. Passion Fruit

The form: It is an oval shaped fruit, about the size of a chicken egg. Ripe passion fruit does not look appetizing - like a dried plum.

Colour: Burgundy brown

Pulp: Yellow, with small flat black bones

Taste: Saturated, sour, passionfruit taste) Probably you also tried peach-passionfruit yogurt? So, a fruit with such a taste really exists

How they eat: Cut into halves, eat the contents with a spoon

Season: January-April

Price: 120 baht per kg (~ 240 rubles or $ 3.7)

Our impressions me: Very sour fruit, you won't eat a lot of it. Interesting to try.

9. Pineapple

In Thailand, delicious pineapple... They are sweeter, small in size.

It is not convenient to clean them, but in almost every fruit shop you can ask to peel pineapple or even cut it into small pieces.

Price: 40 baht per piece (~ 80 rubles or $ 1.2)

We also tried watermelon, not impressed. Astrakhan watermelons are tastier :)

Bananas in Thailand, they sell mainly only small ones, tk. large bananas are considered fodder here.

Tastes like delicious bananas)

The prohibited fruit in Thailand is durian... But it is prohibited except for storage in a hotel. Durians are sold in regular fruit shops. They say that it should be eaten within 5 minutes after opening, otherwise it will start to smell terribly and this smell cannot be washed off. We didn't get this wonderful fruit. Probably not the season. And to be honest, we were looking badly)

Worth trying coconut... Rather - "coconut milk".

Coconuts in Thailand are not sold ripe. Those. inside you will find not a dense nut, with edible walls about 1 cm thick, but only a slimy layer of millimeter 3. But this is also tasty and can be eaten out with a spoon.

Price: 40 baht per coconut (~ 80 rubles or $ 1.3). For this cost, they will open it to you, give you a straw, a bag.

I will also answer a popular question:

Is it possible to export fruits from Thailand and how to carry them?

You can and should :) Take it in hand luggage. You can buy a special plastic carrier for fruits, you can simply fold it into your bag.

Only durian, coconut, watermelon and melon cannot be taken out. Why - she told in

There are a lot of fruit tents in Phuket, they are almost at every step and do not differ much from each other. So you can safely shop in the first one that comes across.

As you can see, fruit prices in Thailand are quite reasonable. When I think that before the crisis it all cost half as much, I begin to regret that I did not go earlier :)

Still have questions? Ask, I will try to answer) I would be glad to any comments and remarks.

Enjoy your travels!)
