An alcoholic cocktail is a drink in which alcoholic beverages are used as one or more ingredients. The cocktail itself is obtained by mixing several liquids, and sometimes with the addition of spices and fruits. What are the most popular cocktails?

What are cocktails? Cocktails are a mixture of several drinks (usually no more than 5 ingredients), plus additional drinks used in very small quantities, such as salt, spices, bitters, etc. The composition of cocktails can be very different. Most cocktails are prepared using ice, so it should be given special attention. It is better to use slightly mineralized or just purified water for making ice. It should be completely transparent and tasteless.

Cocktail history
The first legend, the most romantic, dates back to 1770. In those early days, the owner of a bar located near New York lost his beloved rooster. The owner announced that whoever finds the loss will marry his daughter. After a while, one army officer brought the owner of the bar his cock, which by that time had managed to lose its tail. The owner had no choice but to announce to all visitors of the bar about the upcoming wedding. His daughter, who worked at her father's establishment, began to mix different drinks out of excitement, which immediately began to be called "cock tail" - cock tail.

The second legend says that in the 15th century in France, in the province of Charente, wines and spirits were already mixed, calling the mixture coquetelle (koktel). From this later the cocktail itself came about.
The third legend tells that the first cocktail appeared in England. And the word "cocktail" itself is borrowed from the lexicon of racing enthusiasts, who called unclean horses, that is, those with mixed blood, the nickname cock tail because of their tails sticking out like roosters.

Having received his cocktail, he drank it with such pleasure that he aroused genuine interest among his colleagues and they asked the bartender to prepare the same drink for them. The cocktail received worldwide recognition in New York when the St. Regis working in the bar Petiot, having decided to experiment, added Tabasco sauce to the drink. At the celebration of the cocktail anniversary, the honorable right to say the first toast in honor of the unique "Bloody Mary" fell to the granddaughter of the legendary bartender, and the creator of this cocktail, Fernand Petiot.

In New York, December 1 was declared "Bloody Mary" day. In honor of the anniversary, the cocktail was offered at the price of 1933 - 99 cents.
“Bloody Mary” owes its birth to Fernando Petiot, a bartender who worked in the Parisian bar “New York” at the beginning of the last century.
Legends of the appearance of the Bloody Mary cocktail:
Legend has it that Fernand came up with the name "Red Snapper" for his cocktail, which means "Red Snapper" (there is such a fish). But one of the regular customers of the bar called the drink “Bloody Mary”, after which this name became firmly behind the cocktail. Another legend tells, on the contrary, Fernand Petiot himself called the drink “Bloody Mary”, but the administration of the bar “King Call” tried to rename it to “Red Snapper”. Another legend tells that in Chicago there was a bar called "Bucket of Blood" and a charming girl Mary often visited it, and the Bloody Mary cocktail was named after her.

Blueberries, banana, strawberry ice cream and black currant syrup could even have led this freakshake to victory in the "Most Diet" competition, if one and a half donats, chocolate sauce, cookies and other ingredients did not come to their rescue. "Crazy Oreo Cookie" is a very classic combination of banana, chocolate and the very same cookie. Plus there is also a baby shake that you can assemble yourself.

How to choose the right ingredients for your cocktail?

The main thing in an alcoholic cocktail is quality alcohol. But finding him is not easy for a common man in the street. Supermarket shelves are littered with cheap substitutes for the popular whiskey or rum. Good quality alcohol cannot be cheap. Everything has its own price. It is better to buy well-known brands than some new inexpensive products. Again, very expensive drinks like aged cognac and whiskey should not be used in cocktails, since the subtle nuances of taste in a cocktail cannot be recognized, and you will be wasting your money. So, the main ingredient of the cocktail should be a well-known brand and not from a cheap category, preferably purchased in a specialty store.

For soft drinks, it's best to use seasonal fresh fruits or herbs. For example, nowadays watermelons are very tasty.

What kinds of cocktails are there?

Everything is based on the balance of taste. Cocktails are divided into several flavor groups: sweet and sour, bittersweet, strong and neutral, that is, drinks with a mild taste. It is important to choose the right group for yourself, and then you can experiment on the basis of the chosen one, adding different alcoholic and non-alcoholic ingredients. The basis of an alcoholic cocktail can be any strong alcoholic beverage. For example, vodka, tequila, rum, whiskey, etc.

Strong alcohol is a base to which you can then add soft drinks such as lemon juice and sugar syrup - sour, juices or sodas, or more complex versions with different liqueurs and syrups.

I do not recommend mixing several strong alcoholic drinks in one cocktail, as the taste of the base is lost. Also, cocktails should not contain more than 3-4 ingredients, because if you mix more, then it will not be possible to make out at all what is prepared from what.

What is each type of cocktail?

Let's go in order. Let's start with sweet and sour cocktails.

Sweet and sour cocktails

Sour cocktails (sweet and sour taste) are two parts of alcohol (any alcoholic alcohol), 1 sour part (lemon juice or lime juice) and 1 sweet part (sugar, sugar or any fruit syrup).

These cocktails have a very strong taste and emphasize the taste of alcoholic beverages. These cocktails are popular in the West, but we also have lovers of bright sweet and sour taste.

The most famous sour cocktails are Margarita, Daiquiri, Whiskey Sour.

Here is the recipe for "Margarita":

  • Tequila - 50 ml
  • Orange liqueur - 20 ml
  • Lime juice - 20 ml
  • Sugar syrup - 10 ml

For cooking you need a shaker, a glass of "Margarita" and ice.

Cooking method

Pour all the ingredients into a shaker, 1/3 filled with ice, beat thoroughly to make the drink ice cold, then filter the cocktail into a Margarita glass, decorated with a salted rim.

Also on the basis of sour cocktails, you can prepare more neutral cocktails. For example, if you add fruit juice or soda and syrup to the base sour, we get a long drink with a neutral (weak) sweet and sour taste.

These cocktails are the most popular among Russian bargoers.

Non-alcoholic sweet and sour seasonal drink

Watermelon Lemonade Recipe

  • Watermelon - 100 g
  • Watermelon syrup - 20 ml
  • Lemon juice - 20 ml
  • Carbonated water - 100 ml

For cooking, you will need a shaker, a mudler (pusher for fruit), a tall glass, ice, and a straw.

Cooking method

Put the pulp of the watermelon into a shaker, mash it with a mudler, then pour all the ingredients (except sparkling water) into the shaker, put ice, beat thoroughly and pour into a tall glass with ice, add water and stir. Serve with a straw.

Bittersweet cocktails

Bittersweet cocktails - 1 bitter part (campari bitter, aperol, aperitivo), 1 sweet part (liqueur or vermouth), and, if you want a bit stronger, any strong drink.

Such cocktails are not very popular with us, but they are in great demand in Europe. Soon they will taste them with us.

Example - Negroni cocktail

  • Campari bitter - 30 ml
  • Red vermouth - 30 ml
  • Gin - 30 ml
  • Orange - 1 slice

Cooking method

Fill a whiskey glass to the top with ice, add all the ingredients and stir.

Neutral drinks

Neutral drinks, or long drinks, are drinks with a weak taste, high content of juices or water.

Such cocktails are most in demand in the bars of our city, since the guests of our establishments are not yet accustomed to bright, strong tastes and many are repelled by complex bitter or sour tastes. Strong cocktails have not yet found popularity either. But the more people go to bars and are not afraid to be interested in the drinks they drink, the faster the culture of consuming a variety of drinks develops.

"Mojito" (sweet and sour long drink)

  • Lime - 1/2 pc
  • Mint - 10 leaves
  • White rum - 50 ml
  • Sugar syrup - 20 ml
  • Carbonated water - 100 ml

Cooking method

Put lime and mint in a tall glass, mash with a mudler so that the fruit gives juice, fill the glass to the top with crushed ice, pour in rum, sugar syrup and water, stir and serve with a straw.

Cook at home

Is it possible to make a cocktail at home?

Yes, you can make cocktails at home. But you need to have the necessary equipment, dishes and, importantly, ice in large quantities. Despite the fact that you can cook in your own kitchen, we will still go to restaurants and bars in order to taste dishes and drinks prepared by professionals in special conditions. With regard to ice, the following should be noted: it must be extremely fresh, from purified or spring water. It is undesirable to use yesterday's ice and the one that has absorbed the smells.

What are the ways to mix drinks?

One of the simplest is in a glass. You put on 1/3 of the ice, drain the resulting liquid and add the ingredients, and then stir with a special spoon, pour the drink into a new glass and, if necessary, add new ice.

The shaker makes drinks that require thorough mixing. For example, using cream, syrups or fruit juices. The base, again, ice, the right ingredients. Everything is shaken up for 10-15 seconds and filtered into a separate glass.

And, of course, they mix the drinks in a blender. The ice is mixed with pieces of fruit and cream. Thus, you can get a thick cocktail (whisk for about 30 seconds) or, conversely, very airy and frothy (stir for more than a minute).
