Vegetable puree is one of the three compulsory complementary foods that must be introduced into the infant's diet even before one year old. Often it is with him that the baby's acquaintance with "adult" food begins. How to properly prepare and give your child vegetable complementary foods? Why are vegetables so important for a baby?

What are the benefits of vegetables for children, and why are vegetable purees needed?

Whatever vegetables the baby's puree is made from, it should be:

1. A thicker consistency than milk or adapted infant formula.

How to introduce vegetable purees into baby food

There are no differences from others. Puree should be made from one vegetable, in water, without any other additives. It is allowed to dilute it with breast milk or an adapted mixture familiar to the baby.

On the first day, preferably before lunch, give one teaspoon. Watch for problems: regurgitation, bloating and pain in the tummy, frequent stools or pathological impurities in it (foam, water, greenery, blood streaks). If everything is in order, give 2 spoons the next day (if the complementary food is not the first one, you can 3) and watch again. Continue this until you have replaced the whole meal with mashed potatoes. You can see the approximate amount of complementary foods at different ages here. The portion size will also depend on the baby's appetite, mood and what and how he ate during the previous feeding.

After your little one gets used to the full amount of their first vegetable puree in about a week, you can add a small amount of the new vegetable to it. At least a week is allotted for its introduction, after which the third component can be included in complementary foods, and so on.

How to make vegetable puree for your child

It's simple if you follow the rules:

  1. The vegetables are thoroughly washed, peeled and washed again under running water. If they were kept in a room accessible to mice, it is advisable to pour over boiling water.
  2. Cut into small pieces and toss into a saucepan of boiling water (on the stove or in the microwave). So the beneficial substances are stored in the pulp, and not washed out into the broth. A more successful cooking option is steam: in a slow cooker, a double boiler.
  3. The finished vegetables are rubbed through a plastic sieve or whipped in a blender to achieve the desired consistency. If the puree is too thick, dilute it with boiled water. You can also use a decoction if you are sure that there are no nitrates washed out during boiling into water.
  4. To increase the calorie content of the dish it is useful to add breast milk or an adapted formula for the baby instead of water. For the same purpose, vegetable (45 kcal in 1 teaspoon!) And butter (about 30 kcal in a teaspoon, depending on fat content) oil, and after a year - cream or meat broth.
  5. Spicy herbs and onion feathers can be finely chopped and rubbed with a knife, adding to the finished puree, or whisk together with vegetables in a blender.
  6. It is highly advisable to do without table salt at least until the child is one year old.

If you are not sure about the safety of the available vegetables or do not have the opportunity (time or kitchen equipment) to prepare baby puree of the desired consistency, we recommend giving vegetable complementary foods (at least at first) in the form of canned baby food.

Pediatricians recommend starting complementary foods in the interval from 4-6 months (not earlier than 4 months and not later than 6 months of a child's life) and use vegetable purees or low-allergenic and dairy-free cereals as the first complementary foods.

Vegetables as the first complementary food

From 4.5-5.5 months, a thicker food can be introduced into the child's diet than breast milk or an adapted milk formula, which is denoted by the term "complementary foods". As the first complementary food, it is preferable to prescribe vegetable puree. Vegetable puree is a source of organic acids, potassium, iron, and dietary fiber, including pectins. Vegetable puree as the first complementary food should be prescribed to children with exudative-catarrhal diathesis, rickets, obesity, anemia, premature babies.

Vegetable puree for complementary feeding is a product obtained by rubbing whole or peeled fresh or quick-frozen vegetables of one or more types, previously subjected to heat treatment (blanching).

The introduction of vegetables as a second complementary food, after the introduction of cereals

The second complementary food in the form of vegetable puree made from natural vegetables for baby food (without adding milk and not containing legumes) is introduced in parallel with the first, one month after the introduction of the first complementary foods and a complete replacement of one feeding.

What vegetables to start feeding

The introduction of vegetable complementary foods should be started with one type of vegetables that have delicate fiber and have a light color (from green or white vegetables), for example, with zucchini or cauliflower, then moving on to a mixture of vegetables, with a gradual expansion of the range using potatoes, pumpkins, carrots, later - tomatoes, green peas.

Vegetables for the first feeding

Zucchini, cauliflower and broccoli are top priority vegetable feeds as they are hypoallergenic and are the best starting point for complementary foods. It is cauliflower and broccoli that are often referred to as “college-educated cabbage,” as they are rich in vitamins and minerals.

Vegetables to expand the diet

If complementary foods are introduced at the age of 4-4.5 months, then the first vegetables can be monocomponent, homogenized purees: from zucchini, from cauliflower, from broccoli, potatoes, from carrots.

At the age of 5 months In the life of a child and older, the assortment is expanded due to vegetable puree from pumpkin, beetroot, white cabbage.

At the age of 6 months the life of a child and older, it is possible to add tomatoes.

At the age of 7 months it is possible to expand the vegetable diet by adding green peas.

Industrial vegetable puree for the first feeding can be of various degrees of grinding:

  • homogenized(highly crushed, the number of pulp particles 0.15-0.3 mm in size) - for children over 4 months of age;
  • rubbed(particle size no more than 0.4 mm) and coarse (particle size 2 - 5 mm) - for children over 6 months of age.

Complementary foods from vegetables should be semi-liquid, well-rubbed, homogeneous; it is necessary to switch to thicker foods gradually, accustoming the child to chewing with age.

How to introduce complementary foods from vegetables (scheme of introducing vegetable puree)

Zucchini, cauliflower and broccoli are all hypoallergenic foods and are ideal for starting your first meal. One-component vegetable puree is given to the child with a teaspoon, preferably in the morning for breakfast. You DO NOT need to salt or sweeten the vegetable purees for your child.

Scheme for the introduction of vegetable puree as complementary foods:

First day the baby is given ½ teaspoon of vegetable puree (for example, squash), and then the baby is fed with normal food (breast milk or a bottle of formula). During the day, monitor the body's reaction to the injected product - carefully examine the skin for rashes, pay attention to the stool, whether there is mucus and greens in the feces.

On the second day, if there are no signs of allergies and tummy problems, the child is given 1-2 teaspoons of zucchini (5-10 g) and supplemented with a mixture or milk.

On the third day- 3 teaspoons (15 g).

On the fourth- 4-5 teaspoons. (20-25 g.).

On the fifth day- 50 g. If there is no negative reaction to the introduced product, then you can double the portion.

On the sixth day- 80-100 g, you can give a child a portion twice the previous one.

On the seventh day- 120-150 g, which completely replaces one feeding. The rate in grams per feeding is indicated for a six-month-old baby, if complementary foods were introduced earlier, then the amount of product should be reduced. If your child is breastfed, then after taking vegetable puree, be sure to breastfeed the baby, even if the amount of complementary foods already completely replaces the whole feeding, so you can maintain lactation for a longer time.

For another week, the child is allowed to get used to vegetable puree from zucchini, and only after 5-7 days a new vegetable, such as broccoli, is introduced into the diet. This rule is important to observe if complementary foods are introduced to a child at the age of 4-4.5 months.

Eighth day- ½ teaspoon broccoli cabbage, then add zucchini puree.

Ninth day- 1-2 teaspoons of broccoli cabbage (5-10 g) and give zucchini until the age dose, etc. Gradually, the amount of broccoli cabbage replaces the first vegetable for complementary foods - zucchini.

If the child refuses vegetable puree, then take a break for several days and offer the child mashed potatoes again or replace the vegetable - for example, zucchini with cabbage.

Which is better - buy or make your own vegetable puree for complementary foods

The advantage of factory canned food is that it is sterile, the mother does not need to bother at the stove: cook, grind, it is better to devote this time to the child. It is also convenient to take canned vegetable puree on the road. Canned baby food is recommended for use by leading world and domestic healthcare organizations, so the choice of parents depends only on their preferences and financial capabilities.

If you plan to purchase factory-made vegetable puree, then carefully read the composition. In addition to a vegetable and water, there should be nothing in the jar - no preservatives, dyes, flavors and flavor enhancers, including starch as a thickener. It is desirable that the vegetable puree for complementary foods does not even contain salt and sugar, has a uniform structure and natural color.

Purchased puree in jars, before giving it to a child, must be warmed up in a water bath. Before giving the puree to your baby, be sure to try it yourself. If you feel signs of spoilage of the product, such as a pungent smell, sour taste, or when you open the jar, you do not hear the characteristic cotton, then the tightness of the jar has been broken and such a jar should be thrown away. However, an adult may simply not like the taste of baby vegetable puree due to the lack of additives such as sugar and salt, but this does not mean that it is not suitable for complementary foods. The started jar should be stored only in the refrigerator and no more than a day.

If the parents are limited in funds or eat their own vegetables from the garden or personal plot (imported vegetables often contain nitrates), then the mother will be able to prepare vegetable puree for complementary foods on her own. If you do not have your own garden, then when buying, pay attention to the country of origin, and, if possible, choose vegetables grown in your area. When choosing vegetables for complementary foods, pay attention to their appearance: they should not have defects (black dots, brown spots, dry or wrinkled skin, dents, etc.), but they should not look large and with a glossy shine (such vegetables, most likely have undergone a strong chemical treatment). If the introduction of complementary foods with vegetables falls on the “off-season”, when there are no fresh vegetables or there are only imported ones, pre-made frozen preparations are perfect. Just remember that vegetables should not be defrosted before cooking, since most of the vitamins are destroyed precisely during the slow defrosting process.

For self-preparation of vegetable puree, it is advisable to purchase a double boiler and a blender. Before cooking, vegetables must be thoroughly washed and peeled off, since most of the harmful substances are contained in the peel. Remove all the top leaves from the cabbage and remove the stump from it. And cut off the big "tail" of carrots and beets.

Take one type of vegetable, such as a squash, wash, peel, cut and cook in a double boiler or in an enamel saucepan with a little water.To retain more nutrients, boil the vegetables whole or cut them into large chunks. Put vegetables only in boiling water and cook with the lid closed, but the best option for baby food is steaming vegetables.

Then transfer the vegetables to a blender, if necessary, add a little boiled water (so that the puree is not very thick). Vegetables for the first feeding should be completely boiled, without lumps. It is advisable not to add salt at all, otherwise the baby will not be able to eat fresh food later.

You can add vegetable oil to vegetable puree in a few drops per serving. The best vegetable oil is considered to be cold-pressed olive oil, as well as sunflower, corn and flaxseed oil. The puree should be freshly prepared every time.

For the first six months of his life, a small child eats only breast milk, which contains all the substances and calories necessary for the development of the body. But after six months this food becomes little and the mother needs to gradually accustom the child to complementary foods. It is best if the first "adult" meal is vegetable puree for babies. It is very easy to prepare it, but in the process you need to follow some rules. You can find good recipes for these dishes on the Internet.

Vegetable puree is well suited to diversify the diet of an older baby. Proper nutrition at the beginning of the first or second year will have a beneficial effect on the health of the child in the future. Home-made, following simple recipes, top dressing is preferable to a store-bought ready-made mixture.

When and how to start feeding your baby with vegetables?

The approximate time for starting a partial change in diet depends on the type of feeding: if the baby feeds on breast milk, then the first complementary foods are given at the age of six months. If the child eats artificial food, the introduction of grated vegetables is permissible already for a four-month-old baby.

It is believed that the child is ready to start eating vegetables when he is gaining weight normally, has learned to sit and is trying to make chewing movements with his jaws during feeding. At this time, he needs to cook and offer to try new food - no more than one spoon per day before starting milk feeding. If he accepts a novelty and eats it without whims, the portions are gradually increased. If the baby refuses to puree, it is worth waiting for a while (a day or two) and again offering him a new dish.

It must be remembered that up to a year you should not deprive a baby of breast milk - only reduce its proportion in food. Even if he is no longer breastfeeding, milk can be added to the mixture.

First, the baby is asked to taste a small amount of one-component puree, each time checking his reaction to the product. To make it easier to do, it is worth experimenting in the morning. Allergic manifestations, digestive problems and other symptoms should not be present with normal absorption. It is forbidden to give several completely new "tastes" at once.

A couple of months after the successful start of complementary feeding, you can try mix recipes by mixing several types of puree from already proven and harmless vegetables. After a while, they begin to introduce fruit, and then meat and fish options into the diet, in exactly this sequence.

Rules for cooking vegetable dishes

A good start to complementary foods is mashed green vegetables - squash, broccoli, green peas, cauliflower, squash, as well as carrots and pumpkins. These plants are low-allergenic and highly digestible.

Carrot. An excellent vegetable for the very first complementary foods. It does not cause allergies, is well tolerated and goes well with other foods. Plus, carrots are very easy to cook.

Potatoes should be given very carefully and not immediately. This product is difficult for the baby's digestion, so even in a puree mixture, only 20-50% of it is required.

Cabbage. Some types of this vegetable are broccoli, colored - ideal for the very first mashed potatoes. But you should not give a separate product from the white version.

The first mashed potatoes, while the baby is a little over six months old, should be monocomponent (from only one vegetable ingredient). It is better to use fresh vegetables, ideally to purchase them from a direct manufacturer. But if the starting date for complementary foods was in the winter, fresh-frozen options are also suitable.

There are recipes for the preparation of each type. Common to all vegetables is to peel them thoroughly (if possible) and soak them in water for several hours. It is better to steam them, and bake the pumpkin in the oven. After the products have become soft, they are crushed with a blender or grind through a sieve and immediately "served".

Recipes for the very first meal should not include salt and sugar, only a few drops of vegetable oil are permissible. At this age, seasonings are harmful to the baby. In addition, when he eats, he must learn the natural taste of vegetables.

It is advisable to feed a child up to one year old with a freshly prepared product. But, if too much mashed potatoes are cooked, it can be frozen in molds for people or in silicone ones for baking. Only in this case the mixture should be in water, without butter and milk. To feed your baby with it, you need to defrost and warm up well, and then cool to the desired temperature.

Complementary foods are best prepared at home, but if this is not possible, ready-made baby food in jars will do, usually every child eats them well. But when choosing them, you should pay attention to several important points:

  1. The mixture is bought according to the age of the baby.
  2. The packaging must clearly display information about the manufacturer, his contact details, the expiration date of the contents.
  3. The full composition is indicated, in which there should be a minimum of thickeners, preservatives and similar additives. Ideally, the product should only be puree and water.
  4. Evaluate the integrity of the packaging, the condition of the lid (you need it to fit snugly against the jar) and the appearance of the food itself, if the container is transparent.

From seven to eight months and up to a year, the child can eat more complex mixtures - such an introduction is made from only a few proven vegetables. Now you can expand the list of starting products to include potatoes, corn, spinach, bell peppers. Mashed potatoes should not be given separately from other vegetables, as it is too heavy for the baby's digestive system.

Vegetable puree in the diet of children of different ages

4-5 months

This is the start time for complementary foods. Now the baby is learning to eat in a new way, gradually getting used to the new food. In the first days, he is given a spoon or two mashed potatoes, and by the end of the age of five months he normally eats at least 120 grams of the product, in addition to breast milk.

You should not start complementary feeding if the child does not feel well: he is sick, was vaccinated, or something like that happened. But if the baby is healthy and does not eat mashed potatoes, you need to be persistent - offer him a dish for several days, smiling, persuading him and praising the new food.

In order for the child to perceive the novelty more positively, during a meal it is worth protecting him from stress and distractions. Let him focus only on a spoonful of mashed potatoes and mom's happy face. Think of feeding as a game.

6 months

The volume of food for a six-month-old child is already quite diverse. You can already include a little oil in the vegetable puree. If the baby is accustomed to such food, eats it with appetite and reacts well, mixtures are made of two or three products. At this age, the child already eats 150 grams of puree, among other things.

Some of the best recipes are considered vegetable mixes, for example, from cauliflower and carrots (150/100 g). It is good to prepare a complex dish of zucchini, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli (50/50/50/50), diluted with milk and vegetable oil. After six months, unsweetened yogurt, rice decoctions or pasta can be added to food.

7 months

At the age of seven months, children begin to cut their teeth, and this gives an impetus for a qualitative expansion of the list of possible food products. The baby can already be given croutons and pieces of cheese - their introduction into the diet will not only diversify it, but also alleviate the unpleasant sensations from the growth of the first teeth. In addition to vegetable puree mixes, the child eats porridge, well-cooked and finely chopped lean meat and poultry, eggs, grated cottage cheese and cheese curds. The menu becomes what it should be in the first two years of his life.

All recipes with new products need to be tested empirically for their child's tolerance. Each supplement is allowed to try in small quantities, monitoring the condition of the infant.

8 months

Having received the first set of teeth, the baby can already cope with pieces of boiled vegetables, soups with herbs, and meat and fish ingredients, oil and salt are added to complex vegetable purees. Moreover, the volume of mixes should reach 200 grams per day. Vegetables contain the fiber necessary for digestion, so you need to eat such mashed potatoes in sufficient quantities.

9 months to a year

The baby has already become so accustomed to "adult" food that breast milk can only be given to him at night and in the morning, when he usually eats, and there is no freshly prepared product at hand. In the diet, the main categories of products are approximately equally distributed, including vegetable purees. And from new "tastes" a child can be introduced to fish. The amount of feeding decreases, but the portions increase.

As you can see, vegetable puree is a necessary food product in the second half of a baby's life. It serves both nutritional and educational functions, teaching the baby to new varied foods and facilitating weaning.

Pay attention to the video, which explains in an understandable and accessible form how to cook vegetable puree soup for your baby.

The content of the article:

Every new mom is worried about a lot of questions. One of the most important of these is the baby's nutrition. From the moment when it is time to introduce complementary foods to babies, the opinions of mothers are divided into two categories. Some believe that it is better to use ready-made purees for babies in jars, other women are sure that nothing can be more useful for the health of the baby than dishes made from natural products with their own hands.

If the choice of canned food is a fairly simple task, then if you are going to prepare homemade puree for the introduction of complementary foods for a child of the first year of life, you must follow some rules.

Complementary foods should be introduced:

Not earlier than 6 months, if the baby is breastfed, 4 months - if he eats formula milk (as for mashed potatoes, it is administered not earlier than 6 months of age);

If the child begins to show interest in food;

The kid feels good;

Can eat upright.

In addition, the following rules must be observed:

You cannot give a baby complementary foods three days before and three days after vaccination;

For the first time, a new product is introduced in an amount of no more than one dessert spoon;

Each time, the volume is increased to the required level - in six months, a baby can eat 140 grams of vegetable puree and 60 grams of fruit;

A new product should be introduced within 5-7 days;

You need to offer the baby an unfamiliar product in the first half of the day.

Before introducing a new dish, you should consult with your pediatrician, from what months you can give your baby new products.

The best option for the first complementary food, without a doubt, is vegetable puree, after which fruits are already introduced. Vegetables contain many nutrients that are needed for an actively growing child's body. Fiber, which is part of their composition, helps to normalize stool. It should be borne in mind that if some vegetables and fruits have a fixing effect, others, on the contrary, weakening.

Purée to fix the stool:

Carrot and potato;

Laxative puree for babies:

Pear;

Plum;

Peach;

How to cook baby puree? Infant recipes are generally straightforward and easy to prepare. You need a blender to make pureed fruit or vegetable puree for your baby. If a mother is going to be engaged in self-preparation of meals for the baby, it is better to immediately acquire a high-quality powerful device.

Vegetable purees

As the first complementary food, zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots are introduced into the baby's diet. Vegetables contain a large amount of vitamins and minerals, as well as plant fibers. In addition, vegetable puree rarely causes allergies.

1. Zucchini puree... Young zucchini should be chosen. The vegetable is thoroughly washed and cleaned. Then it must be cut into small pieces and placed on the bottom of the pan. Put on fire and bring water to a boil. After 10 minutes, remove from heat, drain off the liquid. Grind the vegetable with a blender.

2. Carrot puree. Wash and peel the root crop. Put in a saucepan with water, put on fire and boil until tender. A small carrot is cooked for about 20 minutes. When the vegetable is tender, remove it from the water and grind it with a blender.

3. Cauliflower or broccoli puree... To prepare such mashed potatoes, you can take fresh vegetables or frozen ones, bought in a store or prepared yourself. First, the inflorescences must be washed and, if using frozen cabbage, thawed. Boil water and put vegetables there, boil for about 20 minutes. Then the cabbage should be chopped with a blender.

In the same way, vegetable purees are prepared in a double boiler or multicooker. To improve the taste of the dish, you can add a drop of olive oil to it.

It is not recommended to add salt to children's meals. To adults, they may seem bland and not very appetizing, but this is not at all the case. In infants, taste buds are less sensitive, so they do not need to add salt to food. Unsalted meals will be healthier for them.

When the baby tastes all the vegetables allowed for his age, you can prepare various mixes for him. Thus, the mother will be able to provide him with full and high-quality nutrition, and, therefore, will do everything to ensure that he develops harmoniously.

Fruit purees

After the kid got acquainted with healthy vegetables, his diet can be diversified with a delicious delicacy - fruit puree.

1. Apple puree... First of all, apples are introduced into the baby's menu. It takes one fruit and a little time to cook. The whole fruit should be dipped in boiling water and cooked for a few minutes. When the apple cools down, you need to get the seeds out of it, remove the peel, chop the pulp until smooth.

Apple puree can be cooked in a slow cooker. The recipe looks like this:

Wash one fruit, peel, remove seeds, cut into slices;

Place the blanks in a special bowl;

Switch on the desired mode: "baking" or "multi-cook" and set the time: 20 minutes;

Chop the cooked fruit with a blender and give it to the child warm.

You can make applesauce for babies for the winter, this is done as follows:

Take one kilogram of apples;

Take one spoonful of sugar (cane sugar is preferable);

Peel and chop the fruit;
pour 500 ml of water into a saucepan, put chopped apples, put on fire;

Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes;

Prepare small jars that must be sterilized in advance;

Arrange the cooked puree in jars, close the lids and put in a dark place.

2. Pear puree... Infant pear puree should be made from soft fruits. Do not forget that only pear pulp can be used up to 12 months.

The fruit must be washed well, peeled off, removed all the seeds, cut into small pieces. Then the fruit is thoroughly crushed until smooth with a blender. If you wish, you can add a little formula or breast milk to the cooked puree.

3. Banana puree... Banana puree, which is prepared independently at home, has a beneficial effect on the sensitive digestive tract of the crumbs, as well as on its immunity. If the baby's stool is upset, a banana will help normalize it, reduce gas formation.

To make a banana delicacy, you should only take ripe yellow fruits. The fruit must be thoroughly chopped, mash with a fork, or grind it through a sieve. A little breast milk or formula must be added to the finished puree. This is necessary so that the consistency of the dish becomes more liquid.

4. Prune puree... Such mashed potatoes should be given to infants with caution, since they have a powerful laxative effect.

To prepare dried fruits, pour boiling water over and soak for 30 minutes. Then the berries are thoroughly chopped with a blender until a smooth consistency is obtained.

How to store baby puree

Homemade puree can be stored. To do this, it must be decomposed in small portions into ice molds and placed in the freezer.

When the vegetable preparations have cooled down, they must be removed from the molds and placed in a container designed for long-term storage in the freezer. You can use simple plastic bags or plastic containers for this. It is imperative to write the date of preparation on the container. The maximum shelf life of such products is 3 months.

Do not forget that all utensils and other utensils that are used to prepare baby food must be kept strictly clean.

You need to defrost the prepared puree in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

Portions will help mom to increase the volume of food as the crumbs' appetite increases. In this way, it is very convenient to harvest several products and alternate them throughout the week.

It should be borne in mind that frozen foods retain their full nutritional value. So, it makes sense to prepare a certain amount of mashed potatoes, enriched with vitamins and useful microelements, at the end of the vegetable season, so that there is a supply of healthy food.
