How to make a Greek salad, step by step recipes for a classic Greek salad with photos

We already know that the best salad is not the one made in the place where it was born. And the best salad is the one you made yourself. Well, let's cook.

1. The classic recipe for Greek salad with feta cheese

Ingredients:

  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Red onion
  • Olive oil
  • Chees Feta
  • Salt, pepper (optional)
  • Oregano
  • Olives (olives)
  • Bulgarian green pepper - several rings

Preparation:

I have not listed the quantity of each product here. You can take it depending on how you like a particular product. Of course, if you chop up a full cup of cucumbers and add a couple of olives to them, it won't be Greek salad. Therefore, we act wisely. We select the ingredients so that there are approximately equal amounts of them in the salad.

1. Peel the cucumber and cut into large pieces into a dish. The fact that the Greeks cut everything large, I also mentioned in the previous article. Therefore, we follow their example and chop everything into large.

2. Cut the tomatoes into large pieces. I forgot to mention that we washed all the vegetables beforehand.

3. Peel the onion and cut it into small half rings. If you have sweet onions, this is very good. Use it. Although I know that many people love the bitterness and pungency of onions in a salad.

4. Cut a few rings from a large green pepper into a salad.

5. Break the feta cheese into large pieces. No feta, can be replaced with feta cheese or other similar cheese. Or even just some kind of soft, beloved.

6. Spread a few olives and sprinkle with dry oregano. Add all this to taste. We prefer pitted olives, especially served to guests. On the contrary, the Greeks prefer with seeds, they say that they are tastier.

7. Pour all this with olive oil. Olive oil gives a special flavor to the salad. And in Greece this is not an elite oil, everyone uses it. Again, add the oil to your liking. But don't overdo it.

You can add a little pepper if you like. Salt is not worth it. Salted cheese and olives. If you want, add a little salt to the bread before frying.

8. On the grill, frying pan, grill or whatever, put a couple of slices of bread. Pour olive oil on one side, fry them, sprinkle with oregano. Turn over, pour oil on the other side, fry and also sprinkle with oregano.

9. Fry until golden brown. Serve with salad.

So that is all. It remains only to put a bottle of white wine on the table, pour it into a glass and….

  • Lettuce leaves
  • Large fresh bell pepper - 1 pc.
  • Large fresh tomato - 1 pc.
  • Medium fresh cucumbers - 3 pcs.
  • Pitted olives - 50 g.
  • Medium onion head - 1 pc.
  • Feta cheese - 50 g.
Refueling:
  • Fresh basil (can substitute 1 teaspoon dried basil)
  • Dried oregano - 1 tsp
  • Lemon juice - 2 tbsp l.
  • Salt, ground black pepper to taste
  • Olive oil - 50 - 70 ml.

Preparation:

First, let's do the gas station.

1. Finely chop the basil and pour into a deep cup. Add oregano to it. Pour in lemon juice. Sprinkle with black pepper and a little salt. To your taste. Add olive oil and mix everything.

Our gas station is ready. We set it aside for now.

2. For cucumbers, cut off the ends on both sides, cut the cucumbers lengthwise into halves and cut into large half rings. Our cucumbers are young, so we don't peel them. If you have old, large ones, where the skin is very thick, it is better to peel it all the same. Transfer the cucumbers to a deep bowl.

3. Cut the tomato in half, remove the stalk and cut into large cubes. We send to the cucumbers.

4. Peel the onion, cut it in half and cut into thin half rings.

5. We send onions to cucumbers with tomatoes. With our hands we split it into separate strips right above the bowl.

6. Peel the bell pepper, remove the seeds and veins and cut into large cubes. We send chopped peppers to other vegetables in a bowl.

7. Add olives there. Pour everything with the dressing we have prepared, salt a little and mix everything.

8. Cut off the tough part of the stem near the leaves of the green lettuce and put it on a plate on which we will serve the Greek salad.

9. Put the vegetable salad we have prepared on the leaves of green lettuce. And immediately lay out the main ingredient, the cheese, cutting it into large cubes.

Now our Greek salad is completely ready.

Look how beautiful, bright, juicy, fragrant it turned out.

Today our gastronomic travels have brought us to Greece, a country with an extraordinary history, architecture, stunning natural beauty and distinctive colorful cuisine. This time we are mastering the recipe for a classic Greek salad!

There are three legends at once, which are taken as one of the stories of the emergence of a delicious Greek salad. All of them have one thing in common: the ingredients are simple, the most common products in Greece: vegetables, cheese, herbs, olive oil. Obviously, the creator of the dish was not faced with the task of impressing with exquisite ingredients, spectacular presentation or special recipe. A tasty dish is simple and quick - this is what the culinary specialist was striving for.

Each of us can perfectly repeat the taste of this phenomenon and it's really simple. But there are some minor difficulties. And this is natural! We have prepared solutions!

Vegetables and greens

Fresh vegetables without scratches or cuts will make your Greek salad delicious! The tomatoes should be tight, so the flesh won't fall apart from the skin while stirring. The greens are also good in the salad - this is fresh chopped basil, which, if desired, is sprinkled on the salad before serving. On occasion, you should not replace with parsley.

What determines such a multifaceted taste of Greek salad?

It's cheese! Cheese sets the tone for the whole dish, it is just that piquant note that creates a perfect symbiosis with the freshness of vegetables. In the homeland of the dish, feta cheese is used, which must be broken into large pieces or served in a single layer on top of vegetables. - this is how the original, classic version of the Greek salad looks like. Later, the option of cooking with feta cheese, which has a light creamy taste, gained particular popularity. In fact, in every restaurant where the menu contains this delicacy, feta is cut at its own discretion, in Russia the cube shape is the most popular.

How to cut feta or feta cheese correctly?

We often notice that feta crumbles, and feta cheese sticks to the knife during slicing. To avoid this nuisance, keep these foods in the refrigerator until almost before serving. The cheese must be very cold, then everything will work out! Soak the knife in cold water as well. Are you cutting cheese? Brush the knife with olive oil. Or you can choose another tool, such as thread or fishing line.

Dressing Greek Salad

How simple everything is: olive oil, and more! Not at all. To follow the original recipe for the classic Greek salad, pre-mix the extra virgin olive oil with the oregano. The finished dish is also sprinkled with lemon juice or added to the dressing, and a couple of drops of vinegar. You can also add a little black pepper.

Stir or not? How to serve?

Combine all the ingredients, pour abundantly with the dressing and mix thoroughly - actions that are extremely inappropriate. When used, feta cheese begins to knead, and the greens get wet and lose their shape. Vegetables are beautifully stacked together with coarsely torn greens, then cheese - and this is for each portion. Then season with butter sauce.

Greek salad tips and tricks

The portioned serving of salad, practiced in restaurants in Greece, is interesting. It is extremely laconic: the client receives a deep plate of vegetables, where there is no sliced cheese. All the cheese is placed in one piece on top of the vegetable slices. Thus, the client himself decides how he will eat it.

Likewise, the sauce is now almost always served in a separate container with each serving. So everyone will determine for himself how much and when he needs to add the dressing to the Greek salad.

This is very convenient for the hostess. As long as the salad is not seasoned, it will keep better. You can cut vegetables a few hours before the arrival of guests, and pour the sauce already before serving. Moreover, if possible, you need to fill the salad after serving in portions, so that guests do not suffer with putting salad on their plates and distributing the sauce.

Sometimes very large pieces of vegetables and cheese are mixed in a salad without much stirring. Many people do not like serving in large pieces, but it has its advantages: those who do not like onions or olives will easily remove them.
