You could climb onto your father’s or grandfather’s shoulders and see all this human stream supporting the workers struggling with capitalism all over the world.

Balls, bows, pigtails

Not a single demonstration could do without visual agitation. Posters with slogans were drawn in advance: “Peace! Labor! May!”, “Long live May 1!” By the way, only leading workers were trusted to carry portraits of party leaders.

Red bows were attached to the lapels of the coat and raincoats on a pin, the girls wove red ribbons in pigtails, carried flags and carnations in their hands. Some children sewed national costumes of the countries that were part of the USSR. They walked in the head of the column, and the rest were wildly envious of them.

May Day

Initially, the meeting was called a meeting of workers in nature - they discussed revolutionary issues, pretending that they were just going to drink, eat and chat. In the future, revolutionary issues ceased to be interesting, but the May Day celebrations did not disappear. Traditionally, after the demonstration, people moved to nature. Who could not leave - arranged "picnics" in the courtyards of the houses, a chipper, who would bring something.

Barbecue

Well, where on May Day without barbecue? The biggest problem was getting the right meat. Theoretically, in stores it was and was quite affordable, in practice - there was no barbecue option, and not everyone could afford to buy on the market. Moreover, cooked kebabs in large quantities, pickling them in pots and basins.

And yes, the freshness of meat was sometimes suspicious, maybe that's why vinegar was the most popular marinade for meat in the USSR? Nobody really thought about spices, only vinegar with water, onions, salt, pepper, sometimes lemon. The pieces were made large enough so that the meat did not dry out. If you really want to, then you can easily recall the very taste of barbecue from childhood, with a crisp and light vinegar acidity.

Youth

In fact, all our memories of demonstrations and May Day celebrations are not longing for the USSR, but nostalgia for the time when everyone was young and cheerful. When in the morning you, jumping up for joy, put on the first white knee-high socks after winter, and do not give a damn that you also need to wear a raincoat. When the funny parents, confused in balls, lead you by the hand across the square, around their colleagues and friends, and a little drunk dad puts you on his shoulders with one jerk. And you are absolutely sure that all this will never end.

“May Day is more important than giving -

From April 8 to 22, the youth initiative group of the trade union committee of AvtoVAZ OJSC held a contest for the best May Day chanting. The terms of the contest were not as simple as it might seem at first glance. Participants needed to come up with an unusual short speech (no more than four lines), reflecting the fact that a person is young and not indifferent to the ideas of the union. But already on the first day of the competition, four people responded by sending 19 “chants”! A total of 124 speeches entered the competition.

At first, the works were individual, but closer to the end of the competition, collective ones began to come more often. Particularly active were the workers of DpKUTK, TsZCh-2 (shift “A”) and kindergartens No. 159, 137, 99, 122. The most family-owned was the work of Leonid Pakhuta and his grandchildren Andrei, Anton Ilinginy and Victoria Kameneva. Together they composed 28 “chants” and not only about youth and the union, but about the plant, the city, the new mayor. After all, as you know, AvtoVAZ and the city do not exist separately. These are two equivalent links interconnected in a single chain.

If you carefully read the competition materials, then the whole spectrum of trade union activity is obvious. Judge for yourself: “The trade union family always helps us” (G. She, a professional activist at the Gorky Automobile Plant, joined on the third day of the competition and gave us two wonderful “chants”.

The summing up committee noted that the work of Elena Palenova is special. Her lines: “On the main streets are banners and balls. Navigation is closed for vehicles! Today is a holiday for both adults and children! Today is May Day! Today - a demonstration! ”- went far beyond the speech format, but it's not bad, you see.
