Planning a trip to the Finnish capital and now wondering where to go for lunch while sightseeing? We've compiled a selection of great places to eat deliciously and inexpensively by Finnish standards.

Old covered market

Old covered markets in European cities are a special attraction. They attract with their unusual architecture and, of course, the variety of local products that are beautifully displayed on the shelves. The old covered market in Helsinki is also attractive for the budget traveler because you can dine here deliciously and without much spending.

There are many establishments here, including traditional cuisine. For example, breakfast at Story cafe will cost from 13 euros, meals at lunchtime - from 10.50 euros. The menu is updated weekly, so you can try both Scandinavian and Eastern cuisine. The latter has recently become especially popular in Finland. The counter of the Roberts Coffee chain coffee shop is also located here, which is known for its democratic prices. A coffee with a bun or a sandwich will cost you 6 euros. At Blondie Bakes, a flavored cinnamon roll will cost three euros. A snack at Scandinavian Café costs less than 10 euros: sandwiches with salmon or shrimp cost from 5 euros, meat and fish pies and wickets - 3.60, and coffee - from 2.5 euros. And, of course, no one canceled the tasting of specialties on the market.

Cafe MOMOTOKO

Japanese ramen MOMOTOKO can be called the center of attraction not only for tourists from Asia, but also for everyone who is not ready to spend more than 12 euros for lunch. The cafe is located near the University of Helsinki and the Athenaeum Museum. The lunch menu is valid on weekdays from 11.00 to 14.00 and is updated daily. Chicken lunch in teriyaki sauce with seaweed and seasonal vegetables will cost 11.50, while vegetarian chili ramen is only 10.50 euros. Even if you are late for lunch, don't be upset - from 14.00 to 17.00 the same positions are offered at a fixed price of 12 euros. In addition, you can always choose from the à la carte menu, however, in this case, the average bill per person will increase to 15.50 euros.

Cafe Vapiano

At the entrance to the cafe, you will be given a card on which all the dishes you ordered will be recorded. Then you go to various "stations" with appetizers, soups, pizza, hot and desserts, where you can order. By the way, the menu is available not only in Finnish and English, but also in Russian. Cafe Bar No 9 is famous for its large and hearty portions. The prices for food here are more than humane for the Finnish capital - from 9 to 16.90 euros. The place is definitely not suitable for a romantic date, but for a quick lunch or dinner near Vanha Kirchi and Esplanade Park, it is quite an option. As in other popular establishments in Helsinki, it is a bit cramped here - the place is loved not only by tourists who want to save money, but also by locals. A nice bonus for those who like to take a walk at a later time - the cafe is open until two in the morning, which is absolutely atypical for Finland.

8th floor of Stockmann department store

Stockmann's eighth floor is a true gastronomic paradise. There are gourmet restaurants as well as less sophisticated establishments with attractive prices.

Lunch time varies from place to place, but generally, lunch at a café starts at 10-11 am and lasts until 2 pm-3 pm.

For a sandwich or bun and coffee at Espresso House you will need to pay about 6 euros. At Fazer Café, a salad bar will cost between 9.90 and 14.20 euros, and a lunch - 13.50 euros, it includes an appetizer or salad, a first hot course and a drink. For those who are particularly picky about food, there are special notes on the menu that indicate that the dish contains garlic or an allergen. There is also an à la carte menu, but when ordering individual items, the average bill per person increases to 25 euros. And also in Stockmann there is a Moomin Café, which will attract not only children, but also adults with an interesting interior (here you will meet your favorite characters from stories about Moomin trolls).

You can have a hearty lunch at La Familia. This is another Italian place in our selection. There are several options for lunches: pizza, burger or choice of meat and vegetables. You can also pay for a buffet and choose dishes without restrictions. Either option is offered at lunchtime (11:00 to 14:30) for a fixed price of € 10.20. The drink is included in the price.

Dylan Marmoripiha cafe will be no less attractive institution for budget tourists. The bistro does not have an à la carte menu and is only open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. But here breakfasts, lunches and brunches are offered at very tempting prices: breakfast will cost 3.50 or 5.50 euros, lunch with a fixed number of dishes or a buffet - from 8.90 to 11.90 euros. You can try classic European dishes like grilled vegetables and breaded fish, or you can try cheeseburgers, there are also lactose-free positions and dishes for vegetarians.

Opening hours:
Mon - Fri from 9.00 to 21.00
Sat from 9.00 to 19.00
Sun from 11.00 to 18.00

In this post I will continue to introduce you to my own experience of a (little) budget stay in Finland, although the prices here are not for the faint of heart. Earlier I wrote about how you can be accommodated on a budget, in the future - how to move on a budget, and now - how to eat on a budget and at the same time tasty and high-quality food in Finland. I'll tell you about the possibilities for a good snack costing 1-2 euros and places for a full all-inclusive lunch costing up to 8 euros in Helsinki and Kouvola. And, yes, there are no comrades for the taste and color! I share exclusively my own taste preferences (who would have told me about this when I had not yet lived in Finland!).

Snack

The most budget option is to spend the night in such a hotel / guest house (for example), which has its own kitchen, and before going out, prepare coffee or tea in a thermos and make a few sandwiches for the trip.

Another option is to find one of Lidl's shops along the way, which always has its own, sometimes hot, take-away grocery. So, in the Lidl store we are looking for a shelf with pastries (you can move by smell). On it - Karelian pies for 25 cents, three-quadrangular buns with an abundant amount of sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, etc. - 39-49 cents each, as well as other buns and puffs with different fillings for different tastes and wallets. And find a liter box of juice or a bottle of energy drink / soda. Total: 1-2 euros!

I like to add to them a great soft blue cheese with mold or a piece of jellied meat (it looks like a jellied meat), and, sometimes, sliced cheese or ham. The cost increases by another 2 euros, but the quantity is already for 2-3 snacks! The only inconvenience is that in cities it is difficult to find a place where you can safely eat (I prefer to eat in a car or intercity transport - but about transport and the best places in it - in the next post).

Complete lunch in the center of Helsinki

I used to prefer university canteens - UniCafe with a buffet and a budget price. But lately the price of lunch there has exceeded 8 euros, and I found another place. This is an all-inclusive pizzeria in the basement of the Forum building - entrance from Mannerheim Street. Address: 00100 Helsinki, Mannerheimintie street 20. On the menu: soup of the day (tomato or bean), salads (I especially recommend dressing your salads with creamy herbal sauce) and 5 different types of hot pizza on fluffy dough. And the number of approaches is not limited! To this, you must immediately ask for a glass of water at the checkout - they give half a liter, since tea or coffee, unfortunately, for an additional fee. The cost of such a dinner has recently become 7.90, but it's worth it! I like not only the cuisine there, but also the atmosphere - very stylish (paintings by the artist Crow) and there is no (I hope that there will not be) "conveyor" bustle of fast foods.

Full lunch in the center of Kouvola

The coolest place with great or super-great dining in Kouvola is Lamykin's Cookhouse Restaurant (Café) in Hansa Mall for its third year in operation. Address: 45100 Kouvola, Torikatu Street 3. Entrance from the city market square. Stylish atmosphere, excellent service in Russian, English and Finnish languages, the most attractive prices in Kouvola brought this restaurant to the first place in the city on the popular site tripadvisor.ru

An excellent lunch, in Finnish - Lounas (lOunas), costs 8 euros and includes soup of the day (creamy with red fish, or borscht, or others), several types of salads (including Greek), tea, coffee and pastries! The super lunch also includes one more dish, which is specially prepared for you in the open kitchen-theater (you can watch what the dish is made of, how it is cooked on charcoal in the oven, and at the same time talk with a Russian-speaking chef!). This is a red grilled fish melting in your mouth (for me this is in the first place), meat on ribs, barbecue, etc. (the cost of a super lunch is 11-12 euros). One of my guests, a professor from Russia, confessed to our company there: "I experienced real food ecstasy!"

My numerous guests - scientists, artisans, artists, performers of folklore ensembles from Udmurtia, Komi, St. Petersburg, Moscow and other places remember this restaurant with great pleasure, especially after talking with Yuri - the owner and chef, an open and bright person!

Going to visit the Finnish capital, we often carefully plan our time, not wanting to waste it. After all, there is so much to do. Be sure to visit the sights, take time for shopping, meet with friends, and you never know more interesting things! Visiting should always be interesting, fun, and of course delicious!

Helsinki restaurants where you can eat tasty and inexpensive food

Therefore, guests often have a question: isn't it time for us to refresh ourselves? So where in Helsinki can you eat delicious food without spending the lion's share of your budget? No one can give an unequivocal answer here, because how many people, so many opinions, and gastronomic tastes are very different. Therefore, we will try to present a small overview of the "menu" of Helsinki cuisine.

Rax Buffet

So, the first place where we will refresh ourselves will be the Rax Buffet restaurant, where a simple buffet awaits us. Facility's menu offers: soups, salads, pizzas, desserts, drinks. It should be said that the soup is a little thick there, but it is served in Finnish crispy buns.

Lappi ravintola

On Annankatu street there is a nice Lappi restaurant. Traditional Finnish cuisine is widely represented here (fish soups, venison, homemade Lapland bread ....) When you visit Lappi, be sure to try venison with lingonberry sauce. The menu includes roasted venison, homemade wine and coffee served in a wooden mug called kuksa. Overall, a very pleasant cuisine, interior and atmosphere.

Lappi is the oldest Lappi restaurant in Helsinki. This restaurant has a group menu, here are its conditions: the group size must include at least 6 people and all must choose the same menu. Confirmation of the order must be done in advance, no later than 3 days in advance. The invoice is issued according to the previously agreed number of people. There are four different menus to choose from:

  • Opening hours: Mon-Fri from 12.00 - 00.00, on Saturdays from 13.00 - 00.00, Sunday - closed.

Kappeli

And for a special atmosphere, go to Kappeli. This stylish glass-walled restaurant has been a symbol of Esplanadi Park since 1867. This institution has been keeping traditions for 147 years, but not so long ago it was closed for a two-month renovation, but today it can be seen in the updated interior. An interesting fact from the past is that tea with vodka was served here in 1919, as there was a dry law in Finland at that time.

And today here you can not only eat deliciously, but also immerse yourself in the atmosphere of old Helsinki. But it is worth warning that immersion in atmospheric Helsinki will not be so cheap, on average the price for a dish reaches 20 euros, but still it is worth going here, even at least having a cup of coffee. The institution is located at the address: Eteläesplanadi 1, open daily from 09.00-00.00.
