Yalta Massandra winery. Winery "Massandra" and wine tour "MuzyKagor and Muscat

Crimean winemaking is no less famous than the beaches, so the most famous enterprises in this industry have long been turned into sightseeing objects, they are no worse than museums and architectural monuments. Yalta can boast of a similar attraction. Winery "Massandra" is one of the most famous wine-making organizations in Russia, its products have long and deservedly been glorified all over the world.

Where is the winery located in Yalta?

"Massandra" on the map of Crimea

Winery "Massandra": arose through the labor of princes and stonecutters

It was Count Vorontsov who was the first to take up winemaking. However, the creation of the enterprise is associated with the name of another legendary Crimean resident - Prince L.S. Golitsyn. He decided to build a factory here with tunnels for aging wine (the first in Russia), when in 1890 he was appointed chief winemaker of the Specific Department.

Hundreds of workers pierced cavities in a solid monolithic rock by hand, but the prince achieved the desired effect - they constantly kept the same temperature and humidity, which is very important for the proper maturation of wines. The Golitsyn tunnels are still used in the same form as in bygone times. Leo is also accepted with good reason to be considered the founder of the Museum of Wine at the factory.

From the very beginning, the Massandra Wine Factory in Yalta worked on an extremely solid scientific basis. Carefully selected grape varieties grown on certain soils and in specific conditions. In Soviet times, this tradition was continued by the Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking, created not far from Massandra, in the Magarach tract - it is known by this name.

His developments were introduced into practice at the plant. The results are encouraging - Massandra wines have repeatedly become winners and prize-winners of prestigious international competitions. The glorious traditions of their ancestors are also supported by today's employees of the Massandra Vintage Wines Factory.

Legends of the Massandra wine factory

Like everything in Crimea, the Massandra winery has already acquired legends. Some of them have a solid foundation of facts. So, the truth is told by the tale of the wines immured in the mountain.

During the Great Patriotic War, Yalta winemakers really concreted and camouflaged the tunnels where the most valuable collectible samples were kept, keeping the collection from being plundered by the Nazis. And the Yalta residents preferred to simply pour out ordinary and less valuable sorts of drink, but not let the invaders drink them. The red river flowed into the Black Sea, but the Nazis did not get a sip of the Massandra.

It has its own legends and modern production. So, nowadays persistent rumors are circulating in Crimea that a great admirer of Massandra's "Krasnaya Alushta" is not just anyone, but V.V. Putin. When he happens to come to Crimea, this particular wine is served at his table.

Excursion to the Massandra Wine Factory

For quite a long time, tourists were given the opportunity to visit the Massandra winery.
The excursion includes acquaintance with the museum exposition, which tells about the formation of production, and a visit to underground tunnels, including those containing the rarest, unique wines: the oldest bottle here dates back to 1775.

The rules of conduct are the strictest - the guides warn that even a sharp movement towards the shelves with bottles (there are more than one million of them in Massandra cellars) can trigger an alarm. The precautions are clear - any "alarm" can disrupt the wine aging process. Guests are also brought to the enoteca, that is, to the storage, where samples of the company's products have been collected since the day of its foundation.

Tastings of varietal, aged wines are also held for tourists. In this case, the trial is immediately preceded by a serious scientific lecture on the rules for the use of a noble drink and the characteristics of a particular variety. Travelers' reviews indicate that without this event, a visit to a unique one cannot be considered complete.

There is a company store at the plant. True, the prices in it have not been very different from retail prices lately, but there is more choice. You can also agree on the purchase of aged collection wine for a special price. The enlightened holiday-makers who have been there dream of a "dirtier bottle" - they already know that the dustiness of a bottle is an important indicator of the quality of a drink.

How to get to the winery?

It is not difficult to get to the Massandra Vintage Wines Factory from Yalta by public transport. By bus number 3 you will need to go to the stop "Stakhanovskaya", and then walk in a northerly direction about 250 m. By minibus number 14, trolleybus number 2 or bus number 100 or number 29 you need to get to the stop "Vinzavod", and then proceed about 750 m to the east.

It is also easy to get to "Massandra" by car from the center of Yalta, on the map the route looks like this:

Alcohol becomes a bad habit only when used incorrectly. Indeed, good wines will not harm a person - this has been successfully proven in the city of Yalta by the Massandra winery for many years. An excursion to this enterprise will also help travelers learn the rules of aristocratic drinking and turn the use of a heady drink into an elegant holiday!

Crimea is not only amazing nature, historical monuments and warm climate. Crimea is a whole world of fine and varied wines for every taste. In my humble opinion, to visit the peninsula and not try them is blatant blasphemy. And the oldest Massandra winery in Crimea is a great start to a journey through the local wine riches.

Massandra's wines are not quite what we are used to. Dessert, liqueur and fortified varieties are still very specific in taste. At first, they seem sugary and overly sweet. But once you have tasted and got used to it, it is already very difficult to tear yourself away from them! So it was with me, and now I can hardly admit other guilt. So be careful! is addictive :) And the old plant itself is admiration and delight.

Historical reference

Wine cellars of Massandra are the oldest in Crimea. They were built by a very famous and skilled winemaker - Prince Lev Golitsin at the end of the 19th century. In Crimea, this name is the second most popular after the name of the president. All Crimeans hold the prince in high esteem. The winery itself was built by order of Nicholas I, after he repeatedly visited Crimea and tasted local grapes and wines. Admiring, the emperor decided to maintain and develop this Crimean wealth.

By the standards of that time, the scale of the cellars was incomparable: 7 long tunnels underground, where a temperature of 12 degrees, comfortable for wine aging, was constantly maintained. And the building of the main wine cellar is a unique architectural monument and therefore provides tourists with remarkable aesthetic pleasure. In addition, the old mechanical clock in the main tower beats musically every hour.

The second building of the winery was built in the 20th century. It is located immediately opposite the first, you just need to go through a large area. This square in the courtyard is not a parade ground or a venue for events. This is the roof of the wine cellars. Walking along it, you trample on collection wines :) In the middle of the square, a line is drawn - a kind of border between the 19th and 20th centuries in the history of this factory. The building of the 20th century now houses the administration of the factory, and in the historical one - all the lotions for storing and serving wines.

Today in Massandra wines are stored from eight wineries of the Massandra winery, scattered along the entire coast of Crimea. The head plant itself, located in Massandra, does not produce wine, but only deals with their storage and aging. In total, it stores about 200 thousand hectoliters of wine of 60 different varieties.

How to get there

The plant is located at st. Winemaker Yegorova 9, in a village located on the territory of Big Yalta.

Public transport

From Yalta you can take a minibus # 40, which starts from the Veschevoy Rynok stop. The minibus calls into Massandra itself and stops right at the plant. Travel time is 20 minutes. The minibus runs every half hour.

From Alushta and other villages located to the east of Yalta, you can take trolleybuses No. 52 and No. 53 to the Massandra stop. In summer they run every 20 minutes, in winter - every half hour. In principle, you can get there by any regular buses following to Yalta from Simferopol or the coastal village where you are staying. On Massandra, they all make a stop. Next, you will need to walk through the village.

There is an option to ask the driver to stop at the stop on demand "Winzavod" - this is the next stop after "Massandra". Walk a little closer from it (as much as 250 meters, according to Google).

By car

By car, you can get there in the same way: first, drive along the Yuzhnoberezhnoye Highway until the turn to Massandra, which is indicated not only by a pointer, but also by a decorative stele, and then follow the village itself along the street. Winemaker Yegorov, as shown on the first map.

What to see

You can see at the winery only what the guides show - without a guided tour, the entrance to the territory of the plant is prohibited, except perhaps to the store. The excursion schedule changes in summer and winter, you can see it on their website.

Excursion

During the excursion, experienced guides will tell you in detail the history of the plant, quote the admiring reviews of great people who have visited here at different times; they will show the cellars where collection wines and barrels, in which still young wine is kept, are kept; they will introduce you to some of the intricacies of winemaking and tell you about the structure and operation of the plant in modern times. With a guide, you will also visit the factory square and admire the ancient architecture. Walking through the basements, halls and staircases of the plant is very atmospheric. Subdued light, age-old stone walls, rows of dusty bottles, echo of the guide's words - everything here gives the impression that you are in a mysterious castle full of mysteries.

I came across a very good guide, and everyone listened to him literally with their mouths open. I believe that all the guides in Massandra are masters of their craft, because the plant is not only an iconic tourist place in Crimea, but also a very high-status winery for the whole of Russia. The cost of the excursion is 300 rubles.

Tasting

In addition to the excursion at the winery, you can visit the tasting. In the old vaulted hall, you will be seated at oak tables and will be allowed to taste 9 varieties of vintage Massandra wines.

Advice: it is worth grabbing cheese or nuts for the tasting to interrupt the tastes of the wines. Unfortunately, these snacks are not provided every time. I talked with other tourists who had been there at different times - some got cheese, and some did not. So be forward-thinking.

Before taking a ticket for a tasting, make sure that you are already 18 - for minors, the doors to the tasting rooms are, alas, closed. The tasting fee is 450 rubles.

Score

The brand shop has almost all the wines produced at the winery. There you can buy wines that have sunk into your soul during tastings.

Buy an exquisite drink in glass or on the bottle (in plastic bottles) to make it easier to take home a piece of your favorite Massandra.

Crimea is famous for its wines. The wine-making plant "Massandra", or, as it is officially called, the FSUE "Production and Agricultural Association" Massandra "of the Administrative Department of the President of the Russian Federation" is one of the oldest in Crimea. It is located in Big Yalta, in the village of Massandra.

Without a doubt, "Massandra" is one of the sights of the Crimea, you should definitely visit here. On one of the days of our trip to Crimea, we went here on an excursion.

Tours are conducted according to the schedule, accompanied by a guide. There are simple excursions, there are tastings. We were lucky: we got not just on an excursion or tasting, but on a wine tour "MuzyKagorImuskat", which is held on Fridays at 19.00. As the name suggests, we tasted Muscats and Cahors. The wine tour cost 1200 rubles.

Our guide was Alexander Ivanovich Zhukov, who had worked at Massandra for many years and knew all the details of production. I have never heard a more vivid, imaginative story before. A guide from God.

Our guide Alexander Ivanovich Zhukov

The history of the Massandra winery begins in 1891, when the prince Lev Sergeevich Golitsyn(1845-1915) was appointed Chief Winemaker of the Appanage Department in the Crimea and the Caucasus. For the construction, it was necessary to find a place with a special microclimate, on the slope of a mountain, in the tunnels of which an even annual temperature of 12-14 degrees would be kept - optimal for aging high-quality wines. In search of Golitsyn, N.A. Golovkinsky, a geologist and hydrologist, an excellent expert on the southern coast of Crimea, helped.

The right place was found not far from Yalta, next to the Massandra Palace and. In 1894, an underground tunnel-type winery was founded here, which produced table and dessert wines.

Massandra has survived the revolution and wars quite successfully, Gorbachev's infamous anti-alcohol campaign and turbulent post-Soviet years. Nowadays, wines are still produced here, excursions and wine tours for residents and guests of Crimea are conducted.

Founder of "Massandra" Lev Sergeevich Golitsyn

A great contribution was made by a student of Golitsyn, the chief winemaker of "Massandra" Alexander Alexandrovich Egorov(1874-1969). He had the hardest periods in the history of "Massandra" - the revolution, the Civil War, the Great Patriotic War. Under his leadership, Massandra employees managed to preserve a unique collection of wines, restore and expand production in the post-war years.

He and his colleagues are responsible for the creation of many famous vintage wines: "White Muscat South Coast", "White Port Surozh", "Sherry Massandra", "White Crimean Port". In 1944 he created the wine that became the symbol of "Massandra" - "Muscat White Red Stone".

Egorov lived for 95 years. He consumed a small amount of table wine or Madeira daily. Perhaps this is what became the secret of his longevity.

Chief winemaker of "Massandra" Alexander Alexandrovich Egorov

Massandra vintage wines have won more than 200 medals at international competitions. In the 1960s, the palace of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain was supplied annually with a 200-liter barrel of the vintage white liqueur wine "Muscat White Red Stone".

The building of the winery was built in 1894-1897. The construction cost the treasury 1 million royal rubles. The building resembles a castle in its appearance. Its project was developed by the architect Adam Iosifovich Dietrich (1866-1933), the construction was supervised by the chamberlain of the Imperial Court, the manager of the estates of Massandra and Livadia, Vladimir Nikolaevich Kachalov (1864-1942). "Massandra" became the first tunnel-type underground winery in the Russian Empire.

After the revolution, Massandra's production was significantly expanded, the capacity of the old premises was no longer enough. In 1936, a general plan for the reconstruction of the plant was developed. In 1938, a new building was laid in front of the old building. Its construction was completed only in 1956. Both buildings form a harmonious ensemble.

Now let's go to cellars of the Old Building... There is a bottle compartment for one million bottles and stores about two hundred and fifty thousand decaliters of barrel-aged wine.

Holy of Holies -. The collection of wines "Massandra" has about one million bottles and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest in the world.

The bottles in the collection are dusty, you can feel their antiquity. Turn them over from time to time.

The pearl of the Massandra collection - Spanish Jerez de la Frontera(Jerez de la Frontera) 1775, the oldest collection wine in the world, acquired at one time by Prince Golitsyn. In 1964, Nikita Sergeevich Khrushchev allowed one bottle to be opened for tasting. The wine tasted excellent. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, several bottles were removed from the collection outside of Ukraine.

The wine collection is located in several tunnels. On February 8, 1936, Anastas Ovanesovich Mikoyan, People's Commissar of the Food Industry of the USSR, issued a decree "On the formation of a wine collection fund", which, in particular, contained the following requirements:

To oblige the director of "Abrau-Dyurso" and "Massandra" henceforth from each batch of finished wine to leave 500 bottles for the collection (from each variety and brand), however, with regard to especially outstanding wines in terms of quality, the chief winemaker is obliged to A drug addict with a proposal to leave more.

To account for collection wine, enter each batch of abandoned wine in a special numbered and laced book (kept by the chief winemaker) indicating the variety, origin, year of issue and quality. Each entry in the book must be signed by the director and chief winemaker.

Prohibit the consumption of collection wine without my permission.

There is an inviolable museum fund in the wine collection. Another part goes to scientific research. In addition, it is tasted by winemakers in order to learn to distinguish all the subtleties of aroma and taste of wine. Some collectible bottles are sold (of course, they are very expensive) or given to special guests of honor.

Massandra wine is aged in huge oak barrels. Their service life is over 100 years. It is interesting how they are washed: when the wine is drained, a small man gets into the barrel and manually launders it.

Aging workshop "Middle cellar"

In a special workshop, wine is filtered and "tempered" in a special way for long-term storage and transportation.

After the tour of "Massandra" we moved on to the second part of our program - wine tastings... Our program was called "MuzyKagorImuskat". This is an open-air evening music tasting. However, due to bad weather, she was moved to a closed hall.

Accompanied by the Crimean Philharmonic Symphony Quartet, we tasted five Massandra wines - three Muscat and two Cahors: White Muscat, Pink Muscat, Church Department of the Department, South Coast Cahor and White Red Stone Muscat.

A light snack was offered for the tasting. Six glasses were placed on the table in front of each guest: five empty for wine and one with water.

The program was moderated by Elena Batrak, Chief Expert on Collectible Wines FSUE PAO Massandra. She told in detail about each type of wine, its history. At this time, the waitresses poured it into glasses. And then we tasted the wine to the appropriate classical music. It was unforgettable!

Chief expert on collection wines of FSUE PJSC Massandra Batrak Elena Vladimirovna

"Muscat White Red Stone" we tasted last. Perhaps this is one of the best wines I have ever drank in my life. Once the English wine expert Dr. Teicher, having tasted it, exclaimed: “Gentlemen! Wine of such high quality is disrespectful to drink while sitting. " Twice at the international tasting competitions "White Red Stone Muscat" was declared the best wine.

For the production of this wine, the grape variety "White Muscat" is used, which is grown in the vineyards near the Red Stone cliff on the southern coast of Crimea. This rock, located in the Gurzuf valley, is composed of pinkish-yellow marbled limestone. Only those grapes with a sugar content of more than 29% are used to make "Muscat White Red Stone".

Many tourists come to Massandra just to visit the legendary Massandra winery in Yalta. Today this enterprise, which produces legendary wines under the Massandra brand, is the pride of Crimea. In addition to the rich history and various brands of this drink, you will be delighted with the beautiful architecture of the winery itself, and you will feel like you have fallen into the Middle Ages. In addition to the building from the factory with a beautiful facade, on the territory of the Massandra enterprise there are wine cellars and cellars of amazing structure, in which legendary vintage wines are kept.

During a tour of the distillery, Massandra visitors will be shown how wine is made at all stages and will be offered to personally taste the distillery's vintage wines in order to appreciate their exquisite taste.

Where is the Massandra winery located in Yalta?

The enterprise complex is located in the village of Massandra, just a couple of kilometers from Yalta. A visited object near the Massandra winery is the Massandra Palace, which previously belonged to the Russian Emperor Alexander III. Another place where curious vacationers try to get is Massandra Park.

The history of the formation and reputation of a well-deserved drink worthy of the royal table

begins at the end of the 19th century... The main winemaker at that time was Prince L. Golitsyn, it was he who built the wine cellars that have survived to this day. This is confirmed by his bust located at the entrance to the cellars. By order of Nicholas I, the very first winery in the Russian Empire was built. This happened after his trip to the Crimea, where he was delighted with the local wine.

By the standards of tsarist Russia, the scale of the basements was impressive in size: 7 long underground tunnels where the temperature was kept constant in the range of 10-12 degrees Celsius.

The building of the main wine cellar is a unique architectural monument, reminiscent of a knight's castle in style, which attracts tourists. The main tower has an old mechanical clock that strikes every hour.

Wine Vault

In the first half of the 20th century, construction began on the second building of the winery. It is located on the same territory as the old one, and is located directly opposite the first. The square in the yard of the factory is not a venue for events, but the roof of wine cellars. When you walk around the grounds, you literally trample on collection wines. The square is divided in half by a visible line - a kind of border between the 19th and 20th centuries in the history of this plant. The administration of the factory sits in the old building, and in the historical one - everything necessary for storing wines.

More than 400,000 bottles of 60 different varieties are stored in the cellars of the Massandra winery. Here wines are collected from 8 wineries of the plant, which are scattered along the coast from Simeiz to Feodosia. It is noteworthy that in the central plant, where tourists come, located in Massandra, do not produce wine, but only deal with its storage and aging.

What can you learn and see during the excursion?

Tourists who come on an excursion to the Massandra plant will have to get acquainted with the rich assortment of Crimean wines produced at the plant. Enoteca (collection of wines) Massandra is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest in the world. After the historical reference, guests are offered a tasting, where they can taste the most famous wines. Often, snacks in the form of cheese and nuts are served with wine.

Legends of the Massandra wine factory

During its existence, the winery managed to acquire myths and legends. For the most part, they have real confirmation in the form of facts. For example, a true case in the tale of wines immured in a mountain. Legend has it that during the war, Crimean winemakers were forced to concrete and brick up the tunnels in order to hide valuable and rare collection wines. So they saved the samples from being plundered by the Nazis. And the winemakers decided to pour ordinary and less valuable sorts of drink onto the road, but not leave them to the Nazis. Red wine rivers flowed directly into the sea, but the invaders did not get a sip of the Massandra.

Today, modern legends continue to be born. Recently, there are rumors that Vladimir Putin himself is a big fan of the Massandra wine "Krasnaya Alushta". If he comes to Crimea, then he is served only this kind of wine.

What is useful to know before visiting?

Visitors to the excursion should remember about comfortable shoes and clothing. Almost all mobile operators work on the territory of the plant. However, the signal can be lost in basements.

Nearby is the equally beautiful and well-known Massandra Palace, which is also worth a visit.
